Where did you get that from?

I've never heard of that. In fact, Valve have stated multiple times that the SDK will be available for download.

They didn't charge for the HL1 SDK and look where it got them. They now own CS and DoD, two of the most popular MP games on the net. Charging money for the developer tools would hinder free mod development, thereby reducing the life-span of their product/engine

well, that is why I am posting here. I wanted to get to the bottom of this since when my friend told me that he was looking around the system at work, he found the "HL-2 Mod Builder" for sale at $19.99. I didn't believe him since I read numerous places that hammer was going to be included but that was before. I took a look at the packages and the items and hammer was conspicuously missing from the lists.

Mod builder to me equals hammer. All I want to do is find out what is going on so I can plan how much I need to finally be able to purchase HL-2 and be able to mess around with some old maps I started.

im still wondering if it will be easy to use your old rmf files for a source conversion o_O obviously entities will have to be rebuilt with the new FGD ect, if valve charges $20 id pay but i dont see it happening imho

What work/system would that be? A computer store cataloque? There's a book coming out about making MODs called "Half-Life 2: Mod Maker's Source Guide". Maybe that's it (assuming the name was abbreviated or something).

I think it's safe to say Hammer will be free. All evidence given points to this.

EDIT:
Just found this quote in an interview on Gamespy from yesterday:

Doug Lombardi: Now that development on the game is done, a number of engineers are preparing the first version of the Source SDK for release. I don't have an exact date for when this will be available, but it shouldn't be too much longer and will send out word when I have an ETA.

I don't want to get into semantics, but this sounds to me like a free download.

Well, the basic world geometry shouldn't be a problem from what I've seen, but you'll probably have to retexture some stuff, make a new 3d skybox and update the ents.

It's not going to be sold. It, and all the other tools used in map creation, will be made available whenever Valve releases them.

Here's all the info you should need: http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?faq=source_mod_faq

well then perhaps what he was seeing was the guide? I am hoping that is the case as it says in the valve-erc faq.

thanks for the replies.
