[WIP] dod_desolation & dod_base

Evening all,

Well I've been working on a few maps over the last 6 months or so and are about ready to release some [WIP]'s and then release them with in the next week or two

Some notes about things in the two maps, I know that I haven't got the fx amount set right, for some reason setting some brushes to func_illusionary with the fx amount at 255 (hedge textured brushes I'm talking about) doesn't work right and it won't make the blue in the brushes see through. Though changing the render mode to texture works :|

dod_base

I'm still deciding on exact objectives for this map but it will be an assault map with allies pushing forward and there will be advancing spawns.
The maps about 60% finished.

dod_desolation

British troops have been pushing through France and dislodging Axis troops from there positions.
Unfortuantly the SS most prestigious Division named Wotan has been brought forward to halt the Brits in their advance.
Hard bitter has now stalled the advance.

The maps is CTF, it also has fireable 88's and tiger tanks that will fire upon the Brits which are destroyable either via an arty strike or Piat.

They both look good, and I like that street with the 88 firing down it, but dod_base looks a bit modern. I'm no expert on WWII army camps though, but you know. I'm just saying.
Another thing that occurs to me is that the light is not coming from where the sun is.
edit: Oh and you might want to move the transparent textures up a few units so you don't get that little dark line in the sky above the bushes and trees.

So, now that I've crtiticised your map, feel free to criticise my map in the dod_rue thread :D I haven't got as many pictures yet though.

In regard to dod_desolation theres two 88's that fire down a street and also a pak37 (anti-tank gun) that are all fireable.

dod_base isn't that 'modern' looking, check out dod_enemy made by Unreal* I've based my watch towers and compound walls on the ones in that (hope ya don't mind Chris) ATM dod_base is going through some major face lifts in most of the areas aswell. The it will look more '1940's'

Also a note on r_speeds,

dod_base r_speeds don't go over 600wpoly and thats without vis blocking and epolys aren't over 6500 so far in any one area.

dod_desolation r_speeds hit 800 wpoly without vis blocking and eploy is 10,000 at the highest. I'm working on bringing both of those down in this map.

Looks like a good job on both of the maps. But they lack sum atmosphere. Try to add more shadows, because the lightning is a bit to bright.

Well, I also think dod_base looks a bit "new",
I know about dod_enemy and I also think that looks a bit "new",
although they have managed to conseal that a bit with textures
and some more detailed brush work.

And dod_desolation gives me a blocked in feeling, it's a lot of
walls around everywhere, or to be more spesific it's one wall around everything, because it's the same texture on all walls.
(Must admitt that I did not see all the pictures because of the combination of LOTS of pictures on a WERY slow host.)

I think that one of the important but difficult tricks in dod mapping
is to make things feel like they are in a open landscape but still
not use to much space.

Dod_desolation could be interresting but needs to open up a bit.

I'm actually in the process of taking out some of the buildings, proberly two buildings from the middle flag area and 4-6 from the first and fourth flag areas. Along with some of those walls aswell to open it up.

Having to many destroyed buildings unfortuantly has put my epoly/wpoly up higher then I'd like :(

@RA7: The lighting in dod_base is meant to be bright, its the same lighting as in dod_flash I used ripent to find the light_env settings. Though I may need to rotate the map 180 degrees so the suns in the right place on the map to match up with the shadows :(

As for dod_desolation I'm considering a lighting change for that aswell :)

I need more critical feedback and ideas to :p anything and everything needs to be picked apart :)

Well I've gone and redone the whole of dod_base, the only thing still the same is the layout of the road throughout the entire map. I've ripped all the walls out, the tunnels etc, kept the bunker at the very end of the map as thats the end goal for the map.

Its now got a more 'Country' feel to it and I'll proberly change the lighting so theres more shados on it.

R_speeds aren't to bad at the moment the highest I've seen was 750ish, epoly is resonably high but I'm sure that steam is showing the epoly wrong as it seems abit excessive for some areas.

Anyway enough talking I'll attach the pics as I've got no webspace atm

They go in order from the Allied first spawn to the Axis last spawn some of the screenies look back toward where you're coming from as an Allie but you'll figure that out on your own ;)

Ok heres some new screenies of the lastest compile which I tested no more then 10 mins ago. I've added a side area where theres a radar bunker. Allies have to destroy the Radar in order for fighter bombers to come in and bomb a couple of areas.

Yer I'm currently making some areas smaller, and adding some cover in aswell.

Other then that I think it is a bit different to most dod maps as we don't have many that are based in the country side

Reduce density of smoke coming from destroyed trucks, it can be FPS killer and add a wind effect.
Pic 25 and 27 - They don't look good, well, quite bad IMHO. You are allowing players to look behind the scenes. DoD map isn't floating piece of ground. You should avoid such positions available to players. I think such high tower is not needed cause there is no larger open field here. Reduce it to 2 floor one.

Yer I wasn't happy with the way that turned out, from there I can see alot of func_illusionarys in other bits of the map. I may just place another bunker there and extend the side area which I was going to do anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the smoke I'll fiddle with it later on :)

yeah that's a 404 for shure! :D

But I can see all the other images,
and agree that it's not so good that player can see outside the map,
it kinda lowers the quality feel.
But when thats said, I should say it's the best I've seen of
maps actually showing the outside.
It doesent look that bad with the ground in that sky tex.
But to make it a bit more "pro" like you should block the
outside from veiw.

Good job though, it's kinda growing on me this map.
Should be exciting to test it out...

Well I've fixed the seeing outside the map problem, It was only visable from being so high up in the tower, I've now made the offending tower into a destroyed one and the problem is fixed :)

I'll fix that link so it doesn't 404

Errm they all work fine for me except for the last pic I had linked, but thats also fixed now aswell.
