Post Mapping Tips Here

I've read most of the FAQ stuff and that but technically knowing how to map isn't half the stuff you need to learn. I'm 1/2 way through my first map and it's going OK but I thought it would be nice if people posted their little 'tips' on mapping. Both for me and new mappers.

Here's mine (pretty common):

- Plan the map beforehand. This stops you staring at Hammer scratching your head.

- Try to keep it as simple as possible. Especially at first.

- Looking at other maps after you know the basics let's you notice all the 'tricks' mappers have used.

There are two ways to build a map:

1. Plan everything before. This doesn't allow you to make big changes afterwards, but is generally good for planning VIS-blocking into the map, ensuring good framerates.

2. Don't plan anything - just build and se what happens. A generally risky method, but sometimes fun. You do need a gameflow schematic though:

3. Gameflow schematic:

SPAWN----FLAG----FLAG----FLAG----SPAWN

And you can add arrows between the flags to symbolize detours and shortcuts. This schematic is much more important than anything else.

Just my 5 cents.

Hmm a little tip I think.

- Don't select lots of items when applying func_wall or func_illusionary because they will be grouped together forever and you can only manipulate them as a group.

no. you can easily set them back to world bud. learn.

What I usually do is start off with one spawn point and just work from there until I reach the half mark. Then I will review what I did and plan the other half to make it somewhat even for both teams to play.

I start in the center, and work from there. This allows a good even map.

Good to see you back Xerent.

My first tip:
Don't listen to those who give advices  but check by yourself. Always. Be curious. Search. Experiment. Compile as often as possible and use small test maps to test things.

My second tip:
Keep r_speeds in mind whatever method you use to build the map.
People will more or less play your map with a different hardware config than yours.
