To answer a few questions...
The new textures are compatible with the old low poly models so I'll update them too. You'll have the option of the original low-ish poly models or these.
The only area's where theres been an increase in polys is the face and the hands, everything else is as it was in the previous versions. I've just fixed a lot of vertex welding errors so things are a little smoother.
Original models are around 1800 polys max, these push around 2800 polys. Their not the ones I was making for HL2, those are higher still.
Yes, there will be a version with helmets.
Yes they will have moving mouths.
And no, he's not that cross eyed. The angle of the picture doesn't help much but the eyes are correct and in proportion, its just a shame they wont move so he's got a bit of a stare but thats HL1 for you.

I need to look at the eyes a bit. I think the reason he appears to "stare" so much is because the texture for the eyes is actually too large. It makes it too sharp so when its rendered the edges stand out too much.
I need to tweak the hands a bit too as the fingers don't quite close right at the moment. I'm going to have to fix some of the animations too as the fingers get all twisted up and look a bit crap really.
I might also cut back on the polies on the ears as I think I went a bit overboard there. Not reall need for all the detail I put in them. If I can get a couple of hundred polies off the model it will help a bit.

Oh, final poly count is 2567 - I made some optimisations for polys/vertex counts and did my best to minmize texture memory useage.
These are probably the best player models I've made to date. :carrot:

Yes. For some reason, in many anims, the fingers get twisted backwards before bending. A problem I noticed long ago. I mentioned it at the time, but nothing ever got done.
I choose not to mess with anims, though, so I never fixed it myself. If you fix them, maybe the dev team'll use them as default, because all the player models have that problem.
It's a small thing, but it's still something that's been there for quite some time. I figure all bugs, glitches and mistakes should be corrected eventually, right?

Well their almost done. I've been putzing around with the face textures but as always im never happy and I could mess with them forever and never relase.
I'm toying with some anim stuff as well at the moment.
But anyway, I have at least one compiled working version and a few friends have tried them in game and have suprisingly reported very little impact on FPS. How it fairs on a full 32 player server we will have to see.

Can't release just yet as the admin who manages my downloads is in sick-bay so you'll have to wait a few days.
While I can't comment on all systems, my P4 2.6Ghz and FX5200 can run them fine with a full server at a nice steady 60fps at 1072x768x32 @ 85hz.

Not much you can do about that with the HL engine. Actually the knees are modeled to try and reduce the 90 degree corners on the knees you get with the default models.

You know, its actually not that bad. I havent noticed my FPS drop below 60 and I only have a cruddy FX5200 card. I think the fact I was really careful making sure all the vertices were welded and that there were no superfluous polygons helps a little. I know the compiler was able to optimise the triangle fans and strips a lot better so I reckon although they have more polys their just as efficient as the lower poly models I made.

Not really, the textures arent any larger than the ones in my previous models their just better organised to save texture memory. I don't think it uses many more textures than say the axis infantry models.
As for the mesh, its a rework of the previous version except I added an extra 500 polys to enhance the detail in the face and hands, used better smoothing groups and did some vertex optimisations which requires less CPU and helps the graphic card draw the models faster.
Its not really rocket science. It just stuff that got :vader::vader::vader::vader:ed switching between LithUnWrap and Milkshape and this time I just have better quality control.
