Koln has been my all time favourite map. When I see a server running it, Ill join. So ive decided to do a recreation of it. Ive done the Axis side of the track so far:

The reason Im doing this is because Koln is my favourite map. Hopefully Waldo does see this post, and maybe someone can inform him. And I pray that Waldo lets me keep Koln somewhere in the name, because thats what Im doing this for. Its going to be my last map before I stop playing DOD, and I want to leave with pride :rolleyes:

Im sorry Random, im not going to stop because of you. Im going to wait for Waldo, even if it takes a million years. You say I will ruin it? I guess you dont have any trust in my mapping. And im going through the level step by step to recreate it, make it look better, and make it more fun. People love dod_hill_classic and dod_heateu_b1, why wouldnt they like this? Trust me, i will go through great amounts of testing with people to make this as perfect as possible, and I just Waldo's support.

I think it's more fun to use my own ideas.

yes, what is your problem with him remaking this map.

Koln was a great map, and by the look of those screenshots it seems neutrino has the skills to "do justice" to the map. I (and most here) would like to see him complete this map since i would like to play this classic map again.

by remakeing a map, ur not just copying it. your paying tribute to the original map and maker. and your also making it so others can have the joy of playing a classic.

Thanks for most of your support guys. Nomad, i really liked what you said here, "by remakeing a map, ur not just copying it. your paying tribute to the original map and maker. and your also making it so others can have the joy of playing a classic." I bet most of those who are thinking that this isnt a good idea (to recreate the map) never play koln, because servers usually do not run it. Im hoping, if I release this, some server will run this map (like the Kustom Kettle and other famous servers) so lots of people can enjoy the intense action this map offers.

BTW, the sky is named DarkHollow i believe. I use it in dod_neutrino, so if you cant find it, just download that map.

Pics look good, nice to see some older maps getting a visual upgrade more in line with DoDs current new maps.

Technically Sturm is a remake of Merderent which was a remake of Ramelle so I don't see why you couldn't release this but just use a different name and state "inspired by dod_koln"

To be honest, its a custom map and with a different name it wont conflict with dod_koln even if Fuzz and Waldo re-release Koln and it should happen to go official.

I must say from what I see here this looks promising. The first screen shot almost made me crap my pants. My only complaint is that I wish that there was a little more dirt/rubble around. I hope that Waldo gives you the go ahead because this map looks great.

Some comments/criticism

You might want to get some reference pictures for your box car. The wheel base (for lack of a better term) it too wide. Also, trains rarely have just two sets of wheels. I believe standard train gauge is 4 feet 8 in (at least in the US)

The airplane model looks nice but a little too bright/clean.

The lighting is awesome and I love the textures.

very nice.

if the rspeeds are nice and low around the track.

try make the actual rails out of brushes like in dod_carantan. i doubt they eat up many polys and they add a nice effect.

Koln was such a great map and from the looks of those screenshots.. i might need new trousers. I adore your attention to detail, such as the tiny rubble piles covering the train tracks. Superb. I thought i was the only one who ever liked koln.

I loved koln, and when they took koln out of rotation, I was sad. Had to be THE map that kept me playing DOD in the early days. For those that loved this map, you are the few that like a chalenging map that has more than 1 route to the same destination, where your wits, not your fire power, won the map, and who are not scared of a little atmosphere (too many players run from maps that are not bright and sunny)

I loved Koln, almost everything about it was perfect (almost because there was some rubble that caused you to get stuck and sometimes "~kill" yourself, remove those minor problems and koln = the best ever)

I would love to see koln getting released again, and have found a server that has it on rotation (one of grim's servers)

One concern I have is that if you keep koln dark, you will lose 1/2 the players right off the bat, those that are scared of the dark. That was koln's major down fall, not a high-noon map. I personaly loved koln, hedgerow, thunder (thunder was it? what donner was before it was flipped mirror-image) I liked the low level lighting. But as we saw with thunder, once it got a brighter feel to it, it went from:
"damn I hate this level"
to
"w00t, donner, the best map 3var!!1"

I will play koln, by you, by waldo, bright, dark, what ever, it is a damn good map, BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN!! if people drop because of the map lighting I will be playing with frecking bots again.

My koln is not done. Im just asking what you guys think about the regular Koln. What do you think about the factory side of the Allies map?

And there is little difference between the 1.3 and the 3.1 koln.

Im using the 3.1 spawn system forsure, because it prevents spawn camping. And in 1.3 Koln there were no pipes infront of the Allies spawn. Are you saying you dont want that?

the only thing I didn't like in the factory was when you came in from the railyard there was a room over on the left handside with a silo kind of thing there, seemed kinda pointless and I don't recall ever seeing anyone in there. Maybe remove that?

anyways, one thing i was going to suggest is you know those 2 tunnels that lead from the 3 tank zone to the grass area by the sniper loft, i was going to say perhaps make the tunnels so you can walk thru and dont have to duck - today you dont have the time to spend half a minute crouching thru a pipe. just a suggestion.

Just don't spam models, especially the vehicles. The hedache of bad clip brushes and wasted FPS isn't worth the extra detail all the time.

when i clip models, i use both the clip texture and the actual material. I will base the actual material inside of the model, and make sure I cannot see it passing outside the model. Then with the clip texture, I will make sure the player will not be able to get a foot or any body part pass through the model. You know what I mean? Just dont worry about clipping.

Also, since this is a small street/house combat map, the models arent a big issue. So its good to make it look a little more higher quality. In the middle, where its such a huge battle area, I cut down on the models. I have the train wheels (those are models), and a few hedgehogs here and there.

Im going to test the heck out of this map with many communities before I get a release out aswell, to make sure things are as close to perfect as possible. I hope to start that within a few weeks. 2 or 3.

just out of interest, did you manage to get a copy of the rmf from waldo or did you decompile it? The reason I'm asking this is I'm miffed on how people figure out the right sizes for everything unless they do decompile to get a rough estimate.

I probably said it somewhere else (or earlier in this thread) but there are two things that would be cool to do in a Koln rebuild. First, make the rail yard continue on (via skybox). Second, have some nice low flying airplanes also in the skybox. Maybe some big burning buildings too.
