Shading Issues With Milkshape.

Usualy when i model in MS i create a basic shape and extrude it and play with it further but then the shading on the parts i've created from that basic shape look really wierd and obvisuly wrong.

My question is how do i fix the wrong shades and how do i overcome this problem while modeling without encountering it in the first place !

Im not sure if the HL engine have any useage of it but if i want to render models in programs such as 3dsm the wrong shading makes it very ugly and unreal.

Here is a small example...

Thanks in advance ;)

Not sure why it's happening, have you tried turning off auto smoothing.....?. Mind you if i was you i would use Lightwave.......:)......lol.

Hehe, well... im sure lightwave is great and everything but i'll have to learn it and i need solutions for models i already have.

i get things like this too. i think from the picture you have shown it will turn out fine. ms3d smoothign is not really that good, it works but tis definetly not the best.

Well, its not shading its bad smoothing.

Your vertex welds are screwed. Select the object group, unweld and re-weld and then it will be fine. You might also need to clear the smoothing groups.

Thanks, i'll try the unweld-weld trick but... about the smoothing groups, i never really got the meaning of it, how do you "smooth" the model ? and how can you do it in MS ?

I never learned milkshape smoothing groups, for smoothing groups I usually use Deep Exploration or 3dsmax.

Unless you're rendering, don't worry about it. HL discards the shading data, anyways, it just cares about vertex welds.

Cheeto's right, I've made models with no shading at all, it just looked black when you look at it in hlmv, but in HalfLife, it looks perfectly normal.

That's good to know.
Still, some of the things i work on need rendering...
