hmm,i actually heard that this forum was meant to be "newbie" friendly. At the time of doing the thread it was 20 to 3 in the morning so iwas a little tired. Also a niggle is something that is bothering me.

I hope this clears things up a little.I really could do with some advice, and not getting my post dissected and cross examined for spellin mistakes and poor use of paragraphs.

Thanks guys:confused:

Your statement, while I assume you meant it to be witty and insulting, however, has made you out to be a little ignorant. Please note following changes to your statement.

Dear God, use proper paragraphs, punctuation and spacing.

Notice the difference, please, from now on when you insult someone. Have the intelligence to do it correctly.

Use the search function. I've already replied to you once about how to run through your map with gl_wireframe to spot bad vis area's. I think you'll also find answers concerning lag and how flickering lights kill fps. You're not going to get "tweeking" hints other than to read all you can on verc and countermap and the other excellent web sites dedicated to HL mapping. Good luck...here's a reprint from my earlier post to you for silly.

First thing...if you have any flickering lights remove them...those buggers cause tons of lag. Ok...now on to the other stuff to try:

1) Add -dev -console to the launch properties of DoD
2) When DoD starts go to the console and enter developer 2
3) Enter gl_wireframe 2
4) Enter r_speeds 2
5) Start your map from the console: map <mapname>

Turn off your minimap

Now...you can see what the engine "sees"...you are looking at the wireframes that the engine is drawing as you move around and you can see how your wpoly and epoly increase/decrease as the engine "sees" stuff. Try and keep your average combat area wpoly below 800 and eploy below 3000. You can swing up in both numbers momentarily but having high r_speeds causes severe fps loss.

Once you've run the map like this check out all the hot spots and try and redesign your brush work to lower those. hint brushes might be needed so if you experiment w/those do yourself a favor and add just one...then recompile...and see if it worked...to often hint brushes are placed incorrectly and cause more trouble then they are worth. If you want to see the map w/o the wireframes just type gl_wireframe 0 in the console.

Good luck!

Thanks for those that helped him, unlike those that hindered him. I have a friend who is dyslexic through no fault of his own, and if I caught you insulting his spelling/paragraphing I wouldn't be too happy

what can i say guys but thanks.i didnt mean for this to turn into a slanging match about puctuations and stuff.

Thanks again fuzz dad.im not entirely sure where i put the -dev -console commands as i use nems batch compiler for mapping.i know you put them into the commands on hammers compiler but i found hammers compiler to be rather bad when compiling maps espeacially with mapmodels in.if i have to do this in hammer, then i will.thanks again for all your help guys.

no. no. no...you put them in the command line when you start DoD. Then you use the gl_wireframe command in-game from the console to see the actual verticies (use gl_wireframe 2) while running around in the map. Set netgrph to 3 and look at the screen when fps drops off...you'll see at that exact moment the engine drawing a ton of other brushes. If you don't see any major increase in brushes then you either have too many models or you're using flickering lights.

Filliping heck! Not often you get help from FD.

Just a genral suggestion - HL doesn't like large open areas. Try to "seal off" areas from others, this is usually done by placing an object between one area and another.

So take Areas X and Y. Without an object completely blocking the view between them, the FPS will go to hell. Place and object between them, and the FPS goes up!

Objects are usually houses, etc.

Hope that helps!

thanks again.still not sure about the command line thing though fuzz dad.i tried the wireframe thing but it said i couldnt do it in multiplayer.i managed to get the r_speeds up though and i saw wot you meant.

You see its my friends maps ive been looking at and he has a knack of putting extra brushes in areas in places he doesnt have to(i know as ive ive had to get rid of all these brushes).

Many thanks also to cptmuppet.I had a sneaky feeling this was the case.your advice will come well in handy there.thanks again.

Im trying to suss the lighting stuff out.ive got tutorials dl so im checkin them out.

Once again,im really grateful for all your help:D :) :D
