Creating Murder Holes

Ok I'm getting better and better at mapping by the second. I need to finish off my custom map with some murder holes. In case some don't know what I'm talking about; well a murder hole is a big hole usually where a mortar hits and it murders quite a few people so thats why they call it a murder hole.
Anyway, I can't seem to figure out how to lower the ground to make the hole so if anyone could supply a good tutorial site, it would be much appreciated or if anyone can just tell me on the forums and that would be great. I've tried checking out the VERC Collective tutorial site but I couldn't find anything on creating holes.
-Thanks in Advance

Are you sure that's what a murder hole is? I thought it meant a pillbox or bunker housing enemy troops

I think you mean a crater. That's not a murder hole. A murder hole is a hole they put people in to murder then just throw dirt on them to bury.

If you don't understand this tutorial:
The moral of the story is, create the crater in a square piece of ground so it doesn't cut up your map in all kinds of little triangles.
Then, inside the square you make triangle shaped pieces of ground that you then shape into whatever shape you desire, using the vertex manipulation tool.

... murderholes are those 15 inch square holes in the bunker walls, just enough to put an mg through it... not craters or mass graves -_- ... like this..

You guys crack me up.
"mortar holes" are usually called "craters" or "impact craters" etc. as we've all realized by now.

Fox holes are what people dig to avoid being shot. Craters or impact craters are the result of artillery or mortars blowing holes in the ground.

If you want to be pedantic, murder holes originate from medieval times. They were in the gatehouse mainly in the section that overhung the main gate and portcullis. They were simply holes in the floor, sometimes with a cover, where the defenders dropped rocks, water, bodily fluids and boiling oil onto defenders below attacking the gate.
As established, you meant a crater.
