i have worked on this weapon for a while now and i think ive finished.

yea, looks pretty good, i would of thought its finished. does the barrel get smaller at the end? it looks like it does

I think the SMG we used in 1.2 for the Japanese was a MP40 with the stick clip rotated 90 degrees. It was pretty cool looking though, and he changed the animations to make it look cool.
I had a whole bunch of pictures for the old JapPack in one of the old forums, before they rebooted a bunch of times.
I will be looking for all my referances once I get home tonight, I will be trying to set up a FTP site for the JapPack again. Then we can get the Japanese weaps together with the player MDLs. Then we can implement the sounds.
I am getting happy about this again.

I have only released player skins so far. I have a couple shots in:

I have done a few weapon skins, but never ones that made releases, I did a thompson for someone, but he quit before he got it finished. I am more of a player skinner, and sprite maker, but I would like to try my hand a weapons too. If you don't trust me with your model I totaly understand, but I would like to try it still. If you don't like it you can always get someone else, not going to make me sad.

I have no experience what so ever with UV maping and such, all I have done is taken the BMPs and work them over.
What I was looking for is something like this:
(kind of done freehand, but it looks like this)

I tried reskinning the type 96 (MP44) from the old pack to get back into skinning, and I wish I would have tried more weapons before, I realy like doing them, maybe better than players.
if badkarma would map it, i could have it skinned in less than a week (my operating systems class takes a lot of my time). Do you have any good ref pictures? Just want to get a feel for the wood texture and hopefully color.

If i remember correctly billy this is NOT the real gun, its a heavly modifyed bren gun, made for a british pack, back in the day..and re-edited to look like a jap weapon.

here is the progress on the skins. Bad Karma will be adjusting the mesh again to allow for greater color depth and less stretching on the barrel. I will be changing the skin a little after that, but for the most part is will basicly look like the picture below.
I think irfroist is going to change the MDL around a little there are a few places that need fixing, like the magazine is in the wrong place and the action handleneeds to be moved up (and think he said he wanted to add an internal barrel)
but here is the skins progress so far...

First of all I would like to thank irfoist for taking the time to make this MDL and allowing me the chance to skin it (My first weapon skin) and BadKarma for making the UV maps and walking me through the steps of getting it going.
While I was skinning I noticed a few things that were not as they should be. Some were minor things that you wouldn't notice and others were make or break concerns, then there was the aesthetics department, stuff that only a modeler/skinner would care about (like the butt is non-existant).
The hook on the farside of the gun that you pull back to cokk the gun is in the grip, not that anyone playing will see it, but I noticed, and think moving it up to behind the chamber where it goes would be a nice change. (See the blue markings)
The rear sights on the MP28 were almost identical to the sights on the longer rifles, they were really long for how short the guns are. I tried to squish as much as I could onto what was there but I think it would look better longer (even too long is good since this is a v_ model it will seem shorter when in game. (See the green markings)
Here is the main one: The chamber was designed in the correct spot, infront of the grip, but the magazine was placed behind the chamber. I found a SMG that places the chamber in where the wood is, but the magazine still sits in the chamber area, the MP28s (Or the ones I found) have the chamber infront of the wood area. The chamber is correct on this MDL, just move the magazine/reciever assembly up to it. (See the red markings)
Aesthetics: (You won't see I skinned the "Never seen" part of the magazine with my own personal Glock's loaded clip complete with Federal "Hydra-Shok" 9mm ammo, never to be seen in game, but there none the less ;) )
These are just a few minor adjustments that will make a good gun better :)

hey nice. thanks for skinning it. have u ever made wood before? i dunno it just doesnt look to...woody...looks kinda clothy, if u change it, id say look up a wood tutorial? dunno. never skinned before

The wood looks great, very real infact, however it would be nicer a bit darker, and with less hilights.
But its still nice.
And on a side note: redoing what said was needed to be redone.

done, everything is now ready, everything on the model has been fixed, some chanes to the uv map were needed, the main barrle skin is now longer so it wont be SO quished "altho not as much" sights are longer, same with uv to beter fix, action slide was moved into location on picture, and is also higher.
a "inner" barrle was added to be seen when the hole are made transparent. clip was redone, moved up and resized a bit.
everything should be good now = )

ive put a inner barrel in so billy could do the holes as seethrew and then it would look cool, seeing inside and all. that needs to be uvmapped badkarma.
imo i think the wood looks like it is a sleeve but i dunno... looks good anyway well done.

some time this weekend i assume. BadKarma just re did the mesh for the front barrel so we can seperate the skins to allow for full color of the rest of the barrel. I need a nap, I couldn't sleep but for a few hours last night.

the skins are near completion. We just need to decide which body we want to use. The redish color wood is a picture of some wood i found, then i put scratches on it. I can't do scratches that well, so i showed the shiny polished one as well.
The yellow one is an actual picture of a weapon cut down and trimmed to fit the model.
We need people to vote on which one they want, then irfoist or BadKarma will get the last say. (I like the yellow the best, but I will go with what ever you guys want.)

THANK YOU, see i always felt like a moron telling everyone it was a type 100 "nothing good about knowing something but never being sure if what you know is correct"
THATS why that type 100 i did billie, and the mp28 do not match, the type 100 looks alot like the mp28, but its longer.

the UV maps are all jacke up bad, from when we re did the barrel to allow for transparency. It would almost be easier to start with a blank screen.
I am almost done, just need to clean up the front barrel and decide what to do with that plate behind the barrel lever. I can't see what it realy looks like in any ref pictures. Right now it is just dark grey because it looked weird jet black. Once I have that done this will be finished. I think BadKarma said his animations were done, so just waiting on this skin I guess.

it should be finished by tonight, if I can stay awake ( I am in an insomnia/narkaleptic sleeping pattern right now.
The barrel (the one the bullet travels in) was made of different metal than the heat shield barrel with the hole, IRL so I tried to simulate that. Getting the colors to look good when you add the transparency is hard, but now that you mentioned it, I am looking at making it darker. I still have a few "rubber stamp" areas on that end of the gun anyway, so I can change the color in a snap. It is still in the 99% done phase (actualy like 97%, but...)
I need to :
1) find out what that rear plate thing is suposed to look like
2) ruberstamp / darken the heat shield
3) add a slight shade to the wood (I think #1 is the winner)
4) add shade/highlights to the bolt grove (blindside)
Darkening / recoloring takes little time to do, but that mystery plate will take an hour or so. If I find a good shot of what it looks like. I am tempted to just leave it, but in game that is the one part of the gun you will be looking at more than the rest so I need to do something. I might just add some manufacturing text to it like the Garand's skin, just to break the monotony of the flat surface.

There are no animations, none ready or working that look good or give the model anything good, that is. for now, can you push the gun forward so that the rear hand is on the trigger, the front can be where ever they are. as for the reload, if you can place that front hand on the magazine, great, otherwise, dont worry about it.

Good stuff,
My suggestion for the latest version of the skin is to possibly darken it and make the grain more apparent. At the moment, it seems to have a rather 'plastic' quality to it. Adding more grunge to the wood wouldn't hurt either, but make sure you layer it and the scratches are much smaller.

I think I have done all I can to this skin, and it is ready to be placed on the MDL. There are a few things that I wish looked better, but I can't get it to look the way I want it.
But after all is said and done, I realy like the way it turned out.

Do you plan on doing FOV adjustments for this gun? It can be a pain, but I suggest you give it a shot, otherwise it will look odd compared against all the other guns in the game.
