factory redux

Been preening and tweeking again. The BFE guys really want me to get dod_factory working in 1.2 so I've cleaned it up a bit, re-worked some paths...but it's still a BIG HONKING MAP...lol...in the truest Cherbourg fashion (too large and too big a scale) but I like it. It's prolly a campers paradise and I doubt will get a ton of playtime but I should have a release in the next several days.

With the new cvar_downloads, you might see it more than you anticipate. Does it play like Clervaux? (a large mazy/potential campy map) or more like Flug (long stretches, with a few tight areas)? It looks nice ... can't wait to get in into rotation.
If it plays like Clervaux, it would be a winner in my book.

I remembered last time 240x240 textures were used in the dod_factory map. That wasn't very good imo.
I hope this isn't the case for the redux.
Very nice. Might want to improve on yr JPEG compression quality. Who cares, nice map anyway.

You know...I'm not sure how it's going to play...I've simplified some of the path-ways and with mini-map it should not be hard to find your way from flag-to-flag. The original incarnation of factory had the flags actually moving round-to-round, a two-person required artillery system, objectives that both sides could blow up to close off certain sections of the map and combine that w/no mini-map and it led to mass confusion and hysteria.
Some would say crappy map...others would say a map ahead of it's time (LOL>!OL!OL!L!).
I dropped the roaming flags, the artillery system, the secondary objectives, a basement level, and I turned teh Axis spawn around so it's easier to figure out where to go. THere's still a ton of nooks and crannies and some complain the textures all look alike...well that's intentional...it's a big messy complex that's seen better days.
I will say this...I imagine it'll be a ton of fun on 32 person servers...the map is THAT big. Now...clan style 6x6? Not sure...you can slowly go from one side of the map to the other and not see a soul if both teams take certain routes.

Nope...never used them...i made the mistake of scaling what I had way too high...so it looked like crap. I also had to scale up becuase it's so darned big I had to keep speeds down. This version looks better (for the most part) but that might have something to do with me knowing more about lighting now then I did then.
As far as compression/whatever on pics...I'm w/you...who cares? Too often I see these glamorous pictures and elaborate web sites and sigs (brushwork 75%, texture 34%...lol) on maps that are either crap or never released. I figure after one more playtest I'll release this pup and we'll let the marketplace decide if it's worth a damn.

Looks great, but I think you've met the quota on map names
that begin with the letter "F". Limit three per mapper please . . .

lol...don't get your hopes up too high...it's still a sprawling mess of a layout so if you dislike large mazy-maps then you'll not like this one. It is fun to run around in it though...there's tons of places to go and explore and to jump on and crawl under...probably too much for the average deathmatcher. As is with all my maps it's more what I think a industrial complex should look like than you'll find in reality.
Here's an example...you might ask "WTF is that doing there and WTF is it???" when you look at two kiln-like things in the tank repair facility adjacent to the railyard...the answer is I liked that sequence in EAG in the factory where Jude Law was pinned down by Ed Harris...Mr. Harris was in that old furnace/kiln/whatever...so I put two similar deals in my repair facilty...makes zero sense but it adds to the look. I guess I could create maps that are linear and simple but that's not in my nature. Like how the DoD guys make the game for themselves I map for me...even to the point where it's not as important to me if players play the map or like it as whether or not I like it. Although most folks disagree...I've always liked factory more than all my other maps...lol...shows you I shouldn't be in charge of picking maps huh? :)
I finished up the icons and will work on a better mini-map tonight. We're testing over on CoJ tomorrow night if interested...members first though.

Sweetness, I'll try and head over to CoJ for that playtest I'm looking really forward to seeing this again. I love big maps and I'm hoping there is some easter eggs :D

Yea...a lot of us are getting ready to do the HL2 thing...there's no doubt that new map production has fallen off...but I do see a lot of folks trying to finish out maps they started a while ago...just to clear the plate I suspect.
As stated earlier a few folks at BFE have been really nice and kept contact w/me over the last two years and they've wanted me to rebuild factory so now's the time. I think she'll play better than the previous release and I've managed to figure out a few new tricks to make the map run a tad easier (a lot less entities for one) and I think, although I'm not sure...this might be one of only a handful of maps not to contain a single tree, bush, or any other varient of shubbery...it's all industrial brick, crete, rubble, rusty metal, and chipped stone. Because it's full of sharp objects it comes w/a warning:
"Don't play this map without your safety glasses...the eye you poke out might be your own"

Wow this map looks superb. I just love large mazy maps, they feel more atmospheric. I miss koln and cherbourg so much :'(
