Sprite Editing- What's Possible?

Some of you may remember Freekitten's puff pack (awesome name I know). It was a sprite pack I created back in the days of 2.0. It changed the player hit sprite and all the wall sprites (the dust puffs).

I'm looking into doing another sprite pack for the same thing but it seems like some editing might not be possible. Are the wall hit sprites coded into the game or can I modify them. And same question for the player hit sprite blood sprite.

Thanks in advance.

None of the sprites are coded into the game...they are simply sprites. You just have to find the right sprites which can be difficult because there are alot of dust/smoke puff sprites in the dod and hl gcfs that could be the wallpuff sprites.

As for blood/body hit dust I know that the dust is shot-dust.spr and the blood is blood-narrow.spr.

The wall hit sprite is called puff.spr.

The body hit sprite is blood-narrow.spr and the fog, if a player is hit, is shot-dust.spr.

Thanks for the help so far.

But now something is confusing me. I look in my "Steam\Steamapps\your@mail\day of defeat\dod" but I don't even have a sprites folder. What am I missing. Has the sprite folder moved or something?

You don't have any folders like that because all of the default media are kept in the .GCF files...you have to make the folder structure yourself.

Here are the default sprites for the wall puff, blood and body hit puff.

I could attach other files if you need any.

Only 1 wall puff....

Hmm that's dissapointing. I miss the good old days.

It looks like the wall hit sprites are being controlled by something else. Not sure how to word that right...It's like there is a script that copies the wall puff sprite three times and progressively makes them bigger as they move away from the source of the impact.

Does anyone know if it's possible to control this behavior?

To me it seems like messing with the acutal sprite artwork isn't going to make a whole lot of visual difference. The meat of the sprite is being proccessed somewhere else. If I could locate and in fact control that I could make water into wine.

Could any Devs help me out with this?

I opened up that GCF file and I can see all the sprites and I looked for a script file for wall hits but I'm still not able to find anything.

Is this hard coded in the game?

While searching I did find a thread that mentioned my old puff pack(Freekitten's Puffpack). I still have all my old .spr, they're smooth as silk baby

I don't know if this helps but Ikujinonai released these "Enhanced smoke puffs" (which are pretty good, by the way) and there are two different sprites in the zip file.
