Remake of Seg3

All attempts to contact Kami and others involved with this map have been in vain. I am not the actual mapper, but I will speak for him since I got him going on the project.

Basically, we are looking for a GO! from the maps original authors to work on "fixing" it to work under 1.x. The mapper does not want any credit and he is also the same guy that rebuilt Heatau, which he called HC_1 for Heatau Classic.

His exact words:
I have to change the spawns, change textures, and change some brushwork to models. Almost like 20% of the textures need to be revamped, adding the window textures to the wall textures so extra brush work can be eliminated. And Kami is the texture person to talk to about it. The tank and the truck were all created out of world brushes (r_speed killers) and I'd like to shift them to models. The truck had invisible brush work also untill it got blo-up.

Also would like to lighten up the textures a bit. Running along the street always seemed that in the narrow confines, it looked so dark for a daytime map.

New brushwork, revised spawn layouts, revised textures, and new models. Major, major changes :) Definately need some form of permission on this.

And again, this is to only release it to get it up and running. Credit still goes back to Kamikazi.

So can someone PLEASE give this project the blessing it needs? If not, I leave it up to you, the MAPPING COMMUNITY to tell me what is the right course of action.

Thanks for reading this!!

If you try PMs you hardly get a response, their (team) inboxes are probably full of inane stuff so even if your message was ultimately important they wouldn't see it.

Try kamikazi {at} w00th4x0r {dot} com

I remember he worked on seg4 so maybe that's why he refuses to bless this project.

edit (Shane): lol, edited to protect from spiders...

From what I've read, he's been working on Seg4 for about 2 years now.:D

And if the case is that he doesn't want to have this worked on because he is working on Seg4, then telling me so is good enough for me. But to date, no reply at all.

If I remember correctly, he does textures for the Dev team or at least he did. Maybe he is waiting to have it added to 2.0.

Well, the remake won't be for glory, personal credit, pimpage, and will be available for public domain.

So I guess that makes all the criteria for doing the project in my eyes.

Well if he doesnt respond, then your gonna have to take it as a no I guess.

Its his map, only he can give you the go ahead.

What I think the author should do is just release the RMF files. Then, if anyone wants to play the map, they only need to recompile them using some of the existing tools that are available.

I think mappers should come up with an equally genious map and stop telling people what to do with their work.

On a side note, kami usually doesn't release rmfs to random people...or to anyone...

Have to agree with Klein on this one...
Let's invent some new future classics and stop hugging the
old ones...

By all means, go ahead.

The guy just wants to remake the map, why do you care? Just like any map, if, in the end, you don't like it, don't play it.

I was never much of a seg3 fan, but if someone wants to remake it and put hours and hours of their personal time into it for free, WhoTF am I to tell them what to do?

Yeah, I wish there were tons of new and exciting DoD maps coming out, but they're not. Oh well.

FYI, Klein, I don't have a prob w/ what you're saying. RMF's are the property of the mappers and its their business what they want to do w/ them. However, and I'm sure you realize this, the original thread starter made no such request. It seems you were just replying to subsequent posts.

Shane, seems like you are implying that I dont like seg3!?
And I'm not telling anyone what to do, simply adding my
thoughts on the idea, hope that's allowed...
And, yes you are right, there is not a ton of new maps
comming out, but there are some, and focusing on making new ones instead of trying desperatly to fix up old ones might increase
that number.
(this is not the only topic about fixing up an old map if you have noticed)

And again, this is my thoughts on the topic, not a command!
Hope u understand that Shane. ;)

Anyways, good luck with the seg3 update though Maj.Malfunction.

no, not at all.

Rather, it seemed you were telling people what they should/shouldn't be mapping. :)

Anyway, its fine. Thanks for the further explanation.

I emailed Kami once asking if I could remake seg3, and I got an email that simply said "no."

It would me nice to see Seg3 remade for 1.1, and especially nice to see it running in rotation on the MM!! server.:)

I have no idea what is involved here, as far as the original mappers rights etc, although this is but a "clean-up/optimisation" of said map, in order to get it back into the "fray" as it were.

Totally respect Kami's decision at the end of the day, its his call, but really, there are thousands of people out there that would simply love to play an updated version of Seg3. It was/still is, a much loved map.
