Release: Fountain Using Particle Effects

NC17

I have just made 2 different types of fountains using particle_shooters neither one of them cause a preformance hit unless you check the "ripple when hit water" flag

If anyone would like to use these let me know and i will email them to you and if anyone wants to host this .rmf for mappers to download that would also be great

Here is a pic (ripple when hit water flag checked)

NOTE: The actual fountains are just lil cheapys i made to show off the particle effects and are supposed to look crappy ;)

thats pretty cool. but the ripple effect in the water looks a bit heavy... its like someone put giant flashlights in the water

Yea i know... it is the default ripple effect for particle_shooters if you set the "ripple when hit water"

I could replace them with a good looking splash sprite though

Ok i just fixed the preformance hit and the ugly splash effect caused by checking the "ripple when hit water" flag now there is no preformance hit and the splashes look much better i also made the particle velocity higher on the spouting fountain so it looks more realistic

Here are 2 updated pics

The fadeoff in http://www.dodstudios.net/uploads/uploads/FountainFX2.jpg does not look that great in the picture but it looks perfect ingame but if you want you can change this by setting the fade time in the particle_shooter's properties

It looks great! Is there any way to make the water spouts bulkier? (to give the effect that more water is coming out)

Yea changing the scale is easy you just change the "particle size" in the particle_shooter's properties

New chimney smoke FX and an updated pic of the fountain FX with a bigger particle scale

The chimney smoke might be a little to light for most maps but i made it for my WIP that has rain which makes smoke whiter

Need someone to host it and i cant just post the ent properties because you haveto also know where to place the targets to get the effect to work right

you could just list out all the options you set on your particle shooters for the example.

just a thought :p

Nope because its not just the properties that make the effect work you need to place the entities in just the right positions relative to eachother

Look in my last post i already said this ;)

I might be able to post hammer pics of the positioning and the properties . . .

waterfall as seen in dod_forest would be nice

Unless I miss my guess...

dod_forest uses a func_conveyer for the actual waterfall, and then uses particle shooters for the "Mist" at the bottom.... I doubt the whole thing was done with particle shooters alone...

Conveyor and particle_shooters for the mist is right...

I should try my hand at making awaterfall

you COULD just release a .map file like everyother editor on the planet thats trying to tell people to use particles

and that does bring up something....you shouldn't put Release in your title if your not going to release anything

not bad, the water looks a little too much like smoke though. Maybe it looks better in-game.

Now you need a good fountain model.

Also, you cold just put it in a .map and then zip it up and attach it.

NC17, the .rmf you sent me fails... it dont show any particle falling from the fountain. Also, I can not chose any sprite, when pressing the BROWSE button it only can load .mdl files...

PD: you signature fails because the end has to be [/img] not [img]

There is an error in the 1.0fdg which doesn't allow you to use the .spr, only .mdl. The easiest way to go around this is to make a env_sprite entity and then search for the file path there. Copy that file path into the particle_shooter and delete that env_sprite entity.
