[WIP] Kubelwagen

FuzzDad asked me to make a Kubelwagen map model but with a pretty restricive polycount limit. 667 polygons so far, got a few more little bits to put on on it yet though.

You should get paid for making such models. Really. Low poly modelling and good looks at the same time is really not something one is going to see every day.

To be honest I actually find it hard to do high-poly models. Guess its just the way I think really. I'm used to adding detail in textures rather than in the mesh.

I need to dirty it up a bit first and the textures only about 80% done right now. Might do a desert version too.

BTW, nice little tip when doing wheels.

Orignally the wheels were 10 sided cylinders which looked awful. Total poly count per wheel 40 polys (20 for the rim, 20 for both outsides). What I did was use a transparent 128x128 texture on 2 poly square for the outside and a 16 sided uncapped cylinder for the rip. In combination that came out at 36 polys and looks loads better.

Might make some variations. So far I've only seen pics of grey and sand coloured ones. Not actually seen a picture of a camo one but I'm not doubting they exist.

Very nice. Are you limiting your tex size to 256X256 so that HL doesn't re-sample them because they look very sharp in MS3D.

Nah its a single 512x512 texture and a couple of smaller ones (>128) for the wheels. Not really bothered about the re-sampling, cutting it all up into 256 square textures in a pain in the ass and you should be shooting the enemy not standing around admiring the scenery :)

I would strongly suggest not using 512X512 so that the crisp quality of your textures is maintained.

Looks real good Jed. So are you officially on the dod team now? And as for the r_detailtextures, is that something new to 1.2? The only differance I noticed in the two screenshots was that the ground texture in the first one was alot more detailed, but that was it. Is the r_detailtextures thing limited only to ground textures?

Yeah, I'm making a destroyed version, just needed to get the undestroyed version done first. The way my photoshop file is layed out I can change colours and camo pretty quick hence I threw these 3 skins together.

And I'm not on the DoD team, im just helping with the beta testing for 1.2, just so you know.

There's an art teacher at my college that has a beautifully restored Kubelwagen painted in DAK colors with markings and all the accessories, shovels, gas cans, etc. It's mint, he brings it to school sometimes, I'll try and get a picture next time I see it. Looks just like that DAK Kubel you've got there Jed, good show.

We're hoping to use this in 1.2 but theres a strick polycount limit hence it not being more beaten up.

Ooh, umm, errr yeah I *guess*. Don't have any space left on the texture really to get the whole hood texture on but I might be able to get the roof up. I dont think it will go in 1.2 though but it might be O.K for custom maps. Probably push the poly count up to 800 or so though.

As for the glider, thats only not out because its got so many sub-groups and I need to re-organise it efficiently because people cant see all the sub-groups in Hammer.
