How do you make a decent minimap?
How do you make a minimap for a custom map like the ones released with 1.0?

I assume you make an overview in HLTV and then edit that .bmp file so it looks nice. I've never made an overview, so don't ask me how. There's a tutorial or two out there, but nice places like HoustonDoD will do it for you sometimes because it's a little difficult. Of course they won't make it look pretty for you ;)

With a graphics program and some time to learn it.

I made the bmp file and made the text file to go along with it, but I can't get it to show up in game. :(
It has to do with the new version of dod. It is a little different now.

I tried moving over my old .tga I think it was, then I converted it to a 256 colour .bmp but it still didn't show up. I'll find out how to do it in the meantime though.

Make sure their the right size:
size 1024x768 BMP 8 Bit colors.
I havn't had a problem when I make them this size and colour depth.
u need to make sure it is the right size and file type, i think it has to be 759kb and has to be a 256 colour bitmap with resolution 1024x768, i can do them if u want, well i did them for version 3.1 for a freind of mine, u need to use a bitmap convertor cause sometimes paint programs make the program loose colour whenever u convert to 256 bit from 16 bit, but a convertor doesnt do this

Yep as mentioned, you basically make an overview map just as you would for HLTV or spectator mode. Then basically hand draw a new one that has the same dimensions and such.
What PIU and I did was start with a normal "top view screenshot" type of overview image, then redraw a new one using Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Kept the original as one layer and then built it up. Had a bunch of predone layers to add in the fold effect, the "dirty paper" effect, writing, the grid, etc.

How do I convert it to 8 bit, right now it is 24 bit. The size is right though.
You can use mspaint.exe to reduce the colors ( not recommended ) by loading the *.bmp in, then use File->SaveAs and select 8-bit 256 colour from the drop-down list .... or .... use a better program like PaintShopPro ( I use version 6 ) to first optimize the colour pallet, then reduce it to 256 8-bit before saving.
Waldo, hope you decide to release the layer pic for the overviews :) , and I'll promise never to press a control switch in a second story room, openning the trap door that make me fall 60,000 feet down a shaft to my Doom !!
