WIP: Head

I've taken Jed's low poly head of 296 polys, then edited it to make a better looking guy.:), as Jed always makes he's faces have kipper lips...lol. Then i've remeshed it, and found 2 photo's off the internet of the same face, one from the side and one from the front, and attempted to splice them together. This is my first try at using this method, and i'm pleased up to now how it's shaping up.

Nice work so far mate. i tried to make some player model heads for OTT but they came out ****ed so i left it lol

if you're looking for different photo textures you could always do a request for people from the forms to send you pics of themselves. I'm sure enough people here have cameras and webcams to get you atleast enough face textures for a set lol

Keep up the good work mate.

You've proved me wrong. The skin can make the head. :) Very nice work, I love how it looks.

yeah all of jeds heads have HUGE lips :D

marzy can you make it so the top of the head is on the sides like most head meshes for any model its easier to have a bigger mesh texture that way because the way it is now the top of the head is taking up alot of space from the texture

finally something that isnt rtcw....i hate those freakin heads...ive passed up so many nice models cuz im sick of thinking a ubersoldat or skeleton is gonna come after me next

great work marzy...they kinda remind me of the photo-real operation flashpoint faces, but much cleaner

Oh bugger that reminds me, i forgot to say that the texture i'm working with at the min is 1024x1024, which explains why it looks clean. However instead of me just resizing the image down to 512x512, i could mirror the UV map so it takes up half the space, then move the top of the head thats made up of hair, rotate it and place it in the bottom left corner. Then i would not have to resize the image that much to fit it on a 512x512 BMP file, and by doing so keep most of the quality, i would just have to rearrange the BMP file.

mirrored textures for a face isnt such a good idea :\ especially when someone wants to add a scar or face paint or dirt its always gonna be mirrored from right to left and it wont look too good

but please please mesh the top of the head to the sides like you said :)

I realize this gabagoo, so i might make two types, one optimized to keep max quality, and another thats like the normal way, we will see.

yea, looks nice. i like the way you put the two photos together, they blend well. Maybe, if hes gonan go in dod add some dirt and make him look a lil' meaner, atm he looks a little like a poof, hehe :p

Thanks all..:).

I've been playing around with using a method known as normalmaps http://amber.rc.arizona.edu/lw/normalmaps.html which is great for rendering, but i can't seem to bake the results into a final BMP UV map. I read some where that in xsi you can bake the results into a image using shaders, does anyone know if thats correct, and if so can anyone shed some light on the subject.

I found a similar plugin, but unfortunately it's not free, but just look at what it can do, they say all games will be using this method in the days to come.

just look at the polycount on those models.........

very interesting marzy

even though i didnt read the whole thing :P

would a narmal map work in dod/hl engine ?

maybe i should just keep reading about the normal maps >_<

Silverghost

Normal maps are DX8-9

So you cant render them in HL

But baking the map onto the bmp texture might work, though it wont look as good. If you can find away I hope it'll look good :)

The texture is well put together, but that shadow-line down the middle of his face needs to go.

starting to look like a improved ofp head

Looks pretty nice. I can imagine the skin would come out a bit too pink (especially the lips - they look like he uses lipstick :D) if used in-game so consider playing around with the hues some more and add some dirt and wounds like scratches etc...

As for the hair, if you decide to use a full UV for your skin with two sides (instead of mirroring one side of the skin over) you should put the extra memory used to good use and kill that mirrored look you got going with the hair on the back of the head and the forehead.

Keep going :)
