[MREL] Low poly head + texture template

Got a bit fed up seeing RTCW heads and textures on models so in a desperate attempt to drag this place out of the bowels of theivery I put this together tonight.

It's a low(ish) poly head - about 296 polys, fully UV mapped including a 512x512 Photoshop PSD layered template for making your own face textures. The model has a full texture for the head - its not mirrored for each side.

I wouldn't recommend using a 512x512 texture, but if you re-size it to say 256x256 after texturing the UV map stays ok when you import then texture.

License of use is free - re-texture it, tweak the mesh, use the texture on your own head models if you like. Give me a credit in the release notes if you like, send cash, etc. whatever you want. Just stop using the bloody RTCW textures!

Thanks Jed. I'm going to use these on my model pack and give them moving mouths.

You'll have to model the mouth for it first, this one doesnt have one.

looks good. I'd like to see more new heads released on models, as I too grow weary of seeing the RTCW heads on practically every model. Nice work, and I look forward to seeing how this is used.

Nice work jed ;]
About RTCW... i try using the same texture base but i edit the faces so they are totaly diffrent, the model... well ok, i don't have anything to say there... i simply use it.

but it's great you are doing stuff like these, im really glad to see original releases, especialy ones that are so hard to make such as faces.

P.S
It's really a caveman LOL :D

Trp. Jed
03-24-2004, 06:20 AM
Well the hair/beard, etc is just there so you can see the position of various features for layout, its not meant to be any good. You just need to add your own layers for whatever else you want to add - wrinkles, scars, cammo, etc.

nice head, he does look liek a caveman cross a russian, in a good way of course. you done well for the amount of polys used i think.

03-24-2004, 03:36 PM
umm... no offense Jed but you're gonna have to do something a bit better if you want the people to not keep using RTCW.

Trp. Jed
03-24-2004, 04:19 PM
It's a template - your meant to add hair, etc. yourself - whats on there is only a hacked texture to show the UV layout.

As for the head - its LOW poly. This isn't the Q3 engine.

He said it was low poly from the start. You expect him to model in some nose hairs?

Awesome work as always Jed :)

Just slapped this on one of my wip's, and IT IS GREAT! Thanks Jed!!!!!111 :D

Question Jed: Can we just build on the Skin Base layer? Or would you prefer we create our own textures totally from scratch?

great release im sick of rtcw heads

i hope you dont mind but i changed the face alittle (smaller lips, bigger jaw, mohawk :p )

{tBs}IamDoydy
03-28-2004, 07:21 AM
lol, thats cool. mohawk could do with being a little rounder or roudned off maybe. i dunno if you skiined the mohawk but it looks like solid brown. still its nice

John/Gab,

Do what you like - thats why I made it. I know a lot of people have problems with modelling heads, UV Mapping and skin textures are always hard so this is a base for you to work from.

Change it however you will, all I ask for is a small credit in the release docs.

The hair is just a brush I found in Photoshop, its just under the round ones (PS7) and looks like a little hair curved to the right. I just sized it to like 25 pixels, selected a brown colour and went ape with it - it jitters and randomises the pattern itself.

I'm working on some hair textures anyway at the moment to go with the face template anyway. Just got so much on right now I havent found time yet.

GJ Jed,

Way to be. Ive often found that rather than complaining, doing something to solve the problem works much better.

I respect your ethics even if I dont neccesarily care if someone hacks this or that from another game.

Let me just say, however, that the forums here are a bit unfair. Why should the sound ppl be able to post hacked sounds if the modelers cannot post hacked models. IMO no difference.

No it's something totally different, it's a plugin for lightwave, you just select what polygons you would like hair to grow from, play around with a few settings, then render the object and you have hair. The down side to it though, is you can't carry it over into Halflife, but it's great for renders...:).

I'm not trying to complain, but here is some constructive critisim (my spelling is awful):
I think the reason many people like the RTCW heads is because they look real, not cartoony. They offer moderatly polly head, with a good, high-res, real to life skin. You're head looks cartoonish, otherwise, not real. Don't be afraid to up the pollys a bit, to make it look better, because right now it seriously looks like its from the flinstones, which would be good if this was Day of Bedrock, but not Day of Defeat. Also, try to get a better skin on it, mabye the skin really is everything, and I'm jumping to conslusions, but to me, has of right now, I just think it looks to Cartoony.

Well that last pic i posted, i had subdivided the head into 19000 poly's, and thats nothing to do with the hair, but yet you would not really know it would you.

everyone has their own opinion.
i personnaly am sick and tired of seeing rtcw faces and face textures on every god damn friggin release the only ones which look ok to me are the ones russ conscript reskinned and the ones effex modified and aded his own textures to

@jed i was wondering if you could change the mesh alittle ? :D

the top of the head takes up a big part of the size of the texture so that when you resize it ...................... anyways i was wondering if you could remesh it so it isnt like that ? you know what i mean ?

MaRzY
03-29-2004, 08:41 PM
I think your opinion is a good one, and i agree with you, sorry for letting you know i had subdivided that head into 19000 poly's though. as your opinion on it was not as good as your first.....:D

LOL, it's neither, it's a couple of photo's i found on the net, one from the front and one from the side, that i've thrown together using photoshop. I've still got some work on with the skin, and i might just add a few more poly's to the model, to round off some sharp edges. The skin at the min is 1024x1024, so it wont look quite as nice when i resize it, but upto now for my first time at giving this method ago, i'm pleased with the results.
