[MWIP] - Mapmodel - WACO Glider

Another bought of insomnia...

I'm trying to get this together for Fuzzdad to replace the brush based gliders in, oddly enough, dod_glider.

Need to build a complete one first before I break it appart into pieces to created the crashed look.

I'm going to model the interior too but at the moment I've just done the exterior while I do the outer textures. Inside is just the outside polys flipped with a different texture and a few extra bits.

Poly count is 422 at the moment. I think it will be under 900 with the interior too.

Actually I still have the very first map model I ever made kicking around on my hard disk. It was a crashed Horsa for the ill fated dod_pegasus map. Never got used in the end, although it was in the map. Skin is absolute sh1ite - I hadn't learnt how to do UVMapping back then.

Any chance you could update it for jagd? The really low res skin on that glider pisses me off everytime i see it lol

I'd could probably re-model it to fit Jagd's clipping box but I'd have to re-skin it from scratch again.

To be honest, theres not much wrong with the Jagd skin in its defence. Its just a bit too contrasty in my opinion. That and its been skinned as if the glider was metal when in fact it was wood covered with canvas. Always wondered why it went "ding" when I shot at it.

Anywa, changing subject, I need therapy. I just spent an hour drawing the rims for the Waco's wheel just to scale it down to 24x24 pixels so it looked right. I have GOT to stop obsessing over detail. :(

SWEET JESUS! :O

Trp. Jed

Like it?

Its just a bunch of layers in Photoshop using Overlay mode, Emboss effect and feathered selections flood filled with black.

Ironic thing is that after scouring the web to find a reference pic of the wheels on a Waco and drawing the bloody thing it got scaled down to a tiny size. LOL.

rimjob hehe ;)

looks goood but tbh it doesnt have a metalic effect, is that how you want is ?

Trp. Jed

Well considering how most millitary equipment is made with a matt finish anyway. Plus you wouldnt notice a metal effect in a 24x24 pixel texture.

why do you have to make it 24X24

Because the textures are scaled to fit on a 512x512 bitmap. Theres also the issue of texture scale - if the wings occupy an area of say 512x256 I like to keep the texture of other parts in relative scale to that or you find all your texture work, noise, dirt etc. looks mismatched.

It comes down to tonality and balance really.

Oh and Cheeto, my ICQ is borked so you'll have to PM or mail me.

Still got some stuff to do on the outside texture yet and I need to model the interior too.

It will have transparent windows, etc.

This is not the final model...I'm just placing it in the map to get scaling and other things worked out...but so far so good!

Picture 2 (http://mysite.verizon.net/warewind/images/waco2.jpg) I think you might wanna make the hill leading up the bunker a little wider at the bottom, like a fan. It's looking a little crowded in atm.

Pure Constructive critissism (however u write it), im not sure, but i dont think the Tail would let go that easaly. I think it either still be stuck on the back of the plain or it would be torn apart with a lot of force leaving a lot more broken wood etc laying around and the tail would be laying somwhere forther back. also, if u crash ur plain like that, id asume the from would be damaged a lot more in the proces of breaking trough a wall at full speed.

Other than this it is a real kickass model that looks realy amazing.

I was a pilot in the US Army...I used to fly OH-58 and AH-1 helos...occasionally we would lose one, sometimes with fatalities, sometimes not. In all cases I was amazed at the destruction wrought by the crash sequence itself. I once saw the remains of a small helicopter at the base of a tree...the helo had hit a dead tree while on a low-level flight at full speed (about 100mph), the blade hit the tree, parts of it busted off, the remainder flexed prior to departing the mast and snapped off the tail boom which ended up sticking straight up out of a oak tree a good 50 yards away. The main body of the helo crashed through some trees and the impact forced the pilots body through the back of the seat with enough force to crack the fuselage in two. The skids ended up also departing the aircraft and were found later stuck in another tree.

It took the accident investigation team a while to figure out the actual path the helo took because the crash site was 45 degree's to the left of the flight path...apparently the helo, after the blade did it's damage and cut off the tail boom, went through the first oak tree which caused it to kind of bounce to the left 45 degree's where it ended up on the ground (like a big billard table..the aircraft bounced from tree to tree). We lost the pilot and his navigator.

So never underestimate the way debris looks or lays...it's an extreme act of violence...and it's my interpretation here based on my visual eye...not my realistic eye...i just like the way the pieces look on the ground.

Army service rules pls.

One day in the boot camp I had my MG3 ´:D .....

The map model itself is definately another fine addition to a already fine map. Glider is certainly one of the best and most balanced objective maps avaible for DoD.

No...everyone has their own way of doing things...what might seem pleasing to me might seem silly to someone else...after you said what you said I went back and looked and I agree things were a little whacky so I slightly moved each piece. I just wanted folks to understand that there is no standard way a plane/helo/whatever comes apart when it hits the ground...and remember it's not the long fall that kills you...it's the sudden stop at the end.

Actually I've just been browsing some archive footage of Waco's on training in North Africa and you wouldn't believe the force these things come down with and the sudden stops. Got a couple of them ditching in a lake - thats GOTTA hurt.

Also keep in mind that the Waco's tail was only held on by 4 bolts. A bad landing can easily generate enough force to strain the bolts and snap the tail off.

Other fun tales (no pun intented)...

Waco's having wing spars break in flight and actually manage to continue the flight with a wing bent up at 30 degrees plus, 88mm flak shells detonating inside gliders and literally making them vanish and even the story of one glider being blown apart and its load of a jeep falling out of the sky just past the cockpit of another glider with the jeeps driver still sat in the seat clutching the wheel in shock.

Looking at Fuzzdad's gliders, I can easily imagine the glider in spawn was broad down in a near stall landing, hit the wall with the tail and flopped in or that the one on the hill was hit by an 88, dive to the groud ripping the tail off as it came through the tree and impacting the ground with the fuselage.

But now we're just getting pedantic.
