[WIP] Total Conversion-Italians for Axis

Ok so so far we have:

Trigger
Vandal
Dread
Mortar

signed up, please post here to add or take away your name from the pack.

Here's an example from those great color refrences that were posted so long ago of what I have in mind, input please! :)

maybe the sniper should have the same black color, or a camo pattern.

http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/italians.jpg

Now, as for guns......I'm no historian, or gun efficianato, but here is what I found.

the Beretta pistol (Luger):
http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/beretta.jpg

The Mannlicher-Carcano (Kar)
http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/Mannlicher-Carcano.jpg

The Breda30M642 (MG42/34)
http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/Breda30M642.jpg

The Beretta 1938A (MP40)
http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/berettamodello1938A.jpg
-------------------------

I need refrence pics for a knife, possibly (not needed but desired) a second MG and an assault rifle (worse comes to worse, we'll keep the STG44 and call it lend lease) and some kind of carbine.
-------------------------

Here's the flag (I want the one with the bird on it, but this was used too. If we can find the other one I'd be happeh!) http://vandal.weruniq.com/models/flag.bmp

As far as sprites go, when we finalize a flag, I'd like that used as the obj icons, and perhaps that darn bird (if we can find it) for the overheads.

Sounds...I once, a long time ago recorded italian voices, but my italian is sketchy at best. I will do them again unless anyone else can provide me with better spoken italian translations.

I've got plans for doing some Italian player models, but I have no time frame for their completion, I plan on making a paratrooper pack first, then an Alpini pack.

As for the weapons, when I was planning my pack, I planned on replacing the stg44 with a Beretta 38/A, which fired a 9mm "lungo" round, which was basically an extended 9mm cartrige to give it more power, and replacing the mp40 with either an earlier model beretta, or possibly one of the less common Italian smg's.

I think you should leave the MG's alone, and just say they were aquired from the Germans, as they sometimes were, because the Italians didn't have a comperable LMG. You could replace the FG42 with the Breda 30, though, since they both have the same clip size. Although it would require some reanimating to make it correct, as the Breda had an attached, hinged clip that was loaded with strippers or boxes or something odd.

I've seen several pictures and accounts of Italians equipped with G41's, my guess is that the Germans dumped them on the Italians once they replaced them with the G43, but it would be a good replacement for a semi-auto rifle.

For the bolt-action, I would suggest the Carcano M1891/38 (http://www.gunpartsandmilitaria.com/91moschfull.jpg), because it looks cool. For the sniper rifle, I'd go with something like the Carcano M41 (http://www.gunpartsandmilitaria.com/italianfat41comp.jpg), which would be more realistic for a sharpshooters rifle. I don't know about the scope, as they seem to have never officially issued any teleascopic sights as far as I can tell. I do know that some rifles were modified with scopes, probably privately purchased, so it wouldn't be hard to find something suitable.

My gut lies with Trigger, he knows what the heck he's talking about!

If we can get a modeler, or someone who kind of knows their way around milkshape to model the hats/helemts someone can hack them onto the default axis and we'll start skinning for the inf models....

trigg you keep on keeping on with the paras, if you need help let me know.

anyone who can handle this modelling job??

DreadLord
01-28-2004, 05:12 PM
indeed.. am i just putting these helms on the axis-inf default models?

Vandal
01-28-2004, 05:15 PM
Yeah sure, the problem is getting those helmets/hats. Maybe hack the k43 body onto the MG too just for that extra coolness. I love the short sleeves.

I'd have to disagree there, they look more like Russian helmets, with a slight pinch at the front.

Don't know of its of any interest but Osprey Publishing do a nice book about the Italian Army in WWII with some nice colour plates of the uniforms.

BTW, thought about doing a Eritirian Colonian Battalion soldier for a bit of racial diversity?

Cor, great to have you on. ^^ If you can start with the flag I posted and go for some obj sprites.

Waffle, nice to see your intrest. Hackers we need to see if you can take existing headgear and re-work it to look like the stuff pictured, don't worry about skin distortion and whatnot.....we'll figure it out.

Jed, that sounds intresting, go into more detail for me? I'm not farmiliar.

I've got the three Men at Arms books about the Italians in WWII, they are all very good and I would recommend them to anyone interested in the subject.

You can look them up at amazon, they're pretty cheap there, or at the Osprey (http://www.ospreypublishing.com/) website.

There is also a book about the Italian army in Northern Africa in the mid 30's, not exactly WWII, but not much changed between then and early war, and it's good refrence to Italian colonial armies

Trigger

The flag posted by Mussolini HeadK is that of the House of Savoy, the flag posted by {CoR} ez appears to be that of the RSI. Either would be acceptable, though since we're talking about the Axis they would represent pre(savoy) and post(RSI) armistice Italy.

Must admit I've not seen that second flag linked with any of the millitary operations in WW2. All the documentation I can find shows the first one.

Here's some info I found on it:
"In 1797 the green-white-red colors became the flag of the Cisalpine Republic, then in 1802 of the Italian Republic which became the Kingdom of Italy in 1805, lasting until 1814.

The tricolor flag was restored in 1848 when Victor Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia-Piedmont, adopted it as his flag, placing in its center the coat of arms of his House of Savoy - a silver cross on a red shield with a blue border. In this form the tricolor became the flag of united Italy in 1861; only in 1946 when the country became a republic was the royal coat of arms removed from the flag."

Since there is already a flag of the House of Savoy, just go ahead and make the RSI war flag and they can both be included in the pack.

Hi all,

I did some objective sprites recently for myself - as I've never done any sprite editiing b4 - but maybe might be ok as a start for the Italian conversion. They are just conversions of standard sprites + some custom map sprites. There' a large & small overhead view icon but needs a bit of work .. put it in anyway in case someone can do it better.

Hey there guys. So in my quest to make a romanian pack, i cam across trigger. He said he was working on an italian pack, and i struck a deal with him. I would help him, if he would help me. I have made a berretta 1938a weapon model that works for the STG44. I would like to give it to u guys, but i need someone that can host files. In my opinion it works, i got a good sound for it too. But it all depends on you guys. I am willing to contribute time and effort to help you, if you all can help me afterwards. I dont need as much help, since i am well along the way with the romanians. But please, let me know what u need done, and i will do my best.
