Alright guys, can you do a n00bie a big favor and give him a step by step on how you skinners would skin a model?

I'm having difficulty where to start, I've already checked the tutorial thread and I can't stop getting confused. Maybe an experienced skinner like Brutalization or Marzy would help me out here. :(

I have Microsoft Picture It! for a picture editing software, and while I can't say it's no Paintshop, it's the best image editing software I have on my computer right now.

Alright, now how would I convert, let's say this ugly ass texture to a default Kar98k wood? Picture demensions are 256x256 and it's a jpeg when attached, but I saved it as a .png and it's much bigger in size, yet the same dimensions.

Open the model in HLMV. Go to the texture tab. Select the texture you want to replace and remember its dimensions. Go to your picure editor and resize that texture to the same size as the one you're going to replace. Then convert color depth to 256 colors. Finally save as .bmp and in HLMV click on import and select the saved texture. Click ok and then click save model and overwrite the old model. Backups are always good though. Then you're done.

AFAIK jpg, png etc are all different ways of compressing bitmap (bmp) files which are usually used for web publishing. And then you have vector images... but you don't need to know about that for dod :D

Note: texture files for dod models must be saved as bmp.

Thanks! I'll download HLMV and some other stuff to use that "test" texture to see how it's gonna work.

Goddamn, thanks Pvt. Malarkey!

I'm gonna borrow Photoshop 7.0 from my friend, it's gonna help me much more than this PoS Picture It! software.

The most effective method for making wood is getting some real wood textures and editing them. You get so much better results that way.

I don't think the problem is that, but my whole kar looks like it got wrapped up in leopard skin.

How do I add details like notches, scratches, in the area that I want it to?
