Excellent idea, maybe I can get Arc to quickly make a snowy version

12-11-2003, 02:53 PM
Could be done entirely 3rd party but yes it would be better if arc made dod_forestchristmas or something, with bright lights in the branches, that'd be teh r0x0rs

I'd hit it.

This was being done a long time ago, then I recall a lot of arguing came up for some reason and it sort of disappeared.

This seems like a good idea - maybe a night time snow map!

DoD is SERIOUSLY lacking in non-custom night maps at the moment.

On an unrelated note, apart from that it has to do with mappers,............

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FUZZDAD!

Making it night time would be a lot more difficult that just making it a winter map... you'd have to recompile the map to change the light settings.

For WON only:

1. Decompile.

2. Open up the .map in Hammer. Edit>Select all. Apply any texture to the whole map. Save and close.

3. Open up .map in a text editor.

4. Prepare to change some entity key values.

5. Light Duty Christmas (client doesn't need to download anything on the server side but they may wish optionally to download a custom dod_forrest.wad snowy version. For all clients regardless of whether they installed custom mateiral or not, they get to see snow falling in the server, a snowy sky, snowy trees, and perhaps other stuff you can think of changing!):
Find the info_doddetect in the .map, change the weather to Snowy! Change the cl_skyname in worldspawn entity to a snowy sky that is already available in DoD! Change the pine trees env_models submodel value to the snowy submodel versions in DoD.

OR

Heavy Duty CHristmas (client must download custom stuff on the server. Provide a .res file on the server-side or provide a url to allow clients to go and download the necessary extra wad file to play the new map version)
THis is same as Light DUty Christmas except that you also must:
For the decompiled .map file, cHange the wad references to my_snowy_version_of_forest.wad.

3. Recompile CSG only with -onlyents. Enjoy!

------------------------
Too bad you can't do that on the STeam version 'cause the map is locked inside the gcf file. You'll have to stick to the old v1.0 version.
--------------------------

Note: You can't change the lighting. You can't change entity positions. YOu can't change entity origins. YOu can only change entity key values and class names.
Idea: So, how to simulate weather and time? If only DoD had enforced env_fog (like in ToD), servers could change their env_fog values, weather values, and cl_skynames values accordingly. With env_Fog, you could specify a dark fog and negative fog start values to provide the darkenss you need. You could have different fog values for night, dawn, dusk, evening, afternoon, morning, etc including the different weathers that occur. And they all use the same .bsp file so the client doesnt need to download anything. It would be cool to have a campaign system where the mapper provides a .map framework that can be editted through a GUI to allow you to set values like respawn frequencies and availability for both teams, then automatically recompile with -onlyents. Other stuff that can be modifed are: CHange the weather, time, fog, etc. accordingly. Change spawn positions, etc. All these are dependant on previous results of battles and what borders on the maps ahve been captured (think BFE Battlefield Europe or RISK or CLose combat). WIth a GUI, you could control the MAsters which are used to control which spawn points are active, which areas belong to who, etc at the beginning of the maps. Which landmarks have been decimated or still intact. Which bridges are stlll intact and which has already been taken out. Thus, with a dedicated server admin that know the results from the previous battles, they can easily use the GUI to adjust a .bsp's settnigs due to the outcome of the pervious battles....they can change time and weather accordingly...with weather being something that is determined through a dice roll or something done by the GUI program perhaps. Then, when some "BFE" players play on the server in the next day, they realise "Hey! It looks different now! I remembered last time we won that map to take out that bridge, now taht bridge is gone!". Just some manual editing of the .bsp by the gamemaster.

The easiest way is the aformentioned one...create a dod_forest wad with all winter textures and place it under your steam dod directory...do the same with the models...the problem is that you'd be in a winter map and the rest of the folks playing you would not. Cool idea (pun intended) though...the old Flash-version thing.

Heh...

Or you could force .wad type, and have a custom .wad with one added extra texture in there... making you have to have the custom one, so everyone on the server would have to play with it :D

Make it downloadable from your servers site etc or something.

If they do make a snowy forest, they should have the white camo uniforms to go with it.

Also put some squirrels in there too.

desaturated textures. not too hard to remake. just need to decompile the GCF for the models.
