Release etiquette

This may sound very noobish to you guys but I have a few questions on how to properly release and credit people for their work. I have a simple Polish pack using Marzy's hi-res flags and a Avalance retexture using textures form the other stock maps(check it here (http://www.columbusgaming.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2423)).

Should I have sought Marzy's permission first before messing around with his work even though it was for personnal use? How do I go about seeking permission for the use of other peoples map textures? I haven't seen many people try something like map retexuring so is it something that's frowned upon?

I respect and enjoy alot of peoples work here and I honestly do not want to anger anybody so basically I would like to know what is the step by step procedure on releasing someting and giving credit where it's due.

edit: I prolly won't end up releasing that ava wad because it makes switch look like ass.

There are many oppinions on this, but in the end it really comes down to what you feel is right. I always try to credit people's work, and if the situation calls for it, I will inform them of my intent to modify and release their work in hopes of getting their approval. You'll find that most people here are cool about others modifying their work as long as you give them proper credit.

Only advice I would give is try you absolute best to find out who made any of the resources your using and just fire them off a quick note or email to ask if its Ok. Most will probably say O.K to using their stuff, others wont - personally Im 50/50 with my releases, it depends what your doing with it.

If you can't find the original creator or get no reply either credit them by name or as unknown and simply leave a working email address and a note in the readme saying if there are any errors or ommisions to the credit to contact you.

At least in that sense you are recognising others work and that you are willing to give credit to the right people. I think that should stop you encountering any bad feeling.
