The Fate of Volonne

Good people of the Mapping Forum,

It is through great peril I come to you on mission of utmost importance, for the hour is late and the Fate of Volonne is waning in the night. Just over two years prior to this procolomation beta 1 of Volonne was unleashed upon custom DoD mapping servers throughout the land, and much to my rejoice a following grew upon its breast, suckling like children, pushing it to evolve beyond its initial convictions. So I nutured it, gracing it with improved faculties as the day grew long.

My devotion to Volonne took a natural idle as Vicenza, a demanding mistress who would not yield until full recognition was bestowed upon it, became my new passion. I promised to return to my fabled custom map, yet distraction came in many forms. The draw of Volonne still haunted me, even as more pressing matters seemed to bury me with sinister tenacity. Through my darkest hours in which my future lay in doubt, I emerged, not with a fulfilled promise but with an unexpected beast, a beast known as Switch.

The boisterous fledgling Switch roared to life, ill concerned with trifled objections, for it has made many enemies and has no time for squables over minutia. It apologies not, thanks no one, and crushes the noblest attempt at taming. And for that, unexpected allies it has retained, growing in numbers.

Poor Volonne, seemingly lost as a grain of sand on world of endless beaches, cried out with its last breath. Dead upon the rock it fell. A wretched vision, I cursed myself for my infedlity. The allure of a grander becoming had gripped me with its burning command.

But death cannot stop a vow if the fortitude is strong enough. I smashed upon the walls of Volonne's tomb and dragged its rotting carcass into the light. With a fever from the time of burning cities I worked to restore it.

Yet here it lay before my feet, with new organs, new blood, new senses and hope, but as dead as where I had left it before.

Shadow has returned. What brave knight among men I have known through celebration and duress alike will come to Volonne's aid? You need not have weathered many battles to your enemy's bane, for Volonne may only need a skilled hand. Perchance that hand is yours.

Will you not answer the call?

What exactly needs done to it?

Maybe he wants us to beta test it, cause he said he already reworked it gave it new organs and such.

If he wanted testers he'd have gone to spies like he did with switch, he came to mapping forum cause he needed someone to help touch it up.

I'd do it.. if its touching up.. dont know how well I can if I were to re-make it.

A touch-up would be interesting to do. I think making a riddle out of it was part of the fun :p. I'm always up for a little tinkering, if it's a touch-up you want, you could do the same thing as cr_44 has been going through, or rather just went though by allowing many to try and remake/touch-up and pick the one that you think suits volonne the best.

Hey, once in a while a little spice is nice.

Anyway, yes I'm trying to redo Volonne. I have the old .rmf and .map files. I have stripped it of most of it's entities in an attempt to get it to run in 1.1b. It compliles fine using latest zoner's tools, yet when I try to run the map, HL er DoD crashes to deskop with no explanation. No matter what I do it will not load.

So I'm asking if anyone wants to help me debug this, see if we can get it running again so I can continue with the upgrade (which will mean 100% texture updgrade plus some other goodies).

Any interest? I can send you the necc files and if you want a stab at it and can help I'll put you in the credits in the new .txt file for it.

Let me know.

I've also had my share of good ol' debugs. And I'd be more than happy to help, credit or not. PM me or however.

told you I'd do the retexture. But I'm sick with a temperature and mononucleose so I won't be available for like 3 more weeks or something.:(

So far I have at least one person looking at it. I'm sure I've just missed something dumb in trying to upgrade it from legacy models/sounds/sprites/wads etc...as the map originated back in the beta 1.3 days or there about. It may need some investiation by others. I'll keep you posted of progress.

Yes Klein, thanks very much. Mono sucks. Hopefully it won't be too bad. Try to drink as many fluids as possible, it helps wash it out of your system faster. By the time you recover, Volonne should be ready for a retexture. (I wouldn't want you to look at it now in your weakened condition...it might kill you.)

Well Volonne is alive and kicking. (Izuno check your PMs for the files). I figured out the solution. It always feels great to debug map problems but really sucks having them. Although I do have sympathy for this case, as it was a fairly obscure issue, but personally I had an easier time with it than trying to solve this invisible leak in my other map (which boggled my mind until I just rebuilt a brush and the leak was gone :p) Anyway, glad I could help.

I got your PMs.

Yes, someone else came to the same conclusion. It was a very obscure error. I tested it last night and it works. I then went into the same version but with most of the point entities and found some other legacy object file calls that crashed it as well. It will take some time to rebuild the entity structure, but at least we now know the source of the issue. Hopefully will have a fully playable update running soon, then it's off to the texture factory for a complete overhaul.

Thanks for the looking into this.

I'm happy that I can solve stuff like this on my own now after mapping for about a year. My new goal is to get into the CSNF & NST (Computer Systems and Network Foundations & Network Systems Technician) programs over the next two years and do some good hardware work. Sadly post-secondary will probably take time away from mapping, but maybe not :D.
