Texture size locked

I've seen it mentioned, and noticed myself, that gl_max_size, the command that allows texture size reduction, is locked to 256. This means that all those nice big 512 textures are being reduced to a quarter of their original size and there's nothing we can do about it. This seems like quite a blow against the custom community, and I can only hope that it is a bug that will be corrected soon.

you could always type in a higher number and set the file to read only so steam can't reset it.

That doesn't help from what I've heard. the game just disregards it completely and stays with 256, you can't even set it lower. I'm sure this was part of the engine 'upgrade' that rolled out just before 1.1. Did that patch make anything better at all? Definately something that should be rolled back and redone.

Trigger: Please remember that is is a public beta, kinda like 3.1.

Was wondering about the lock myself... must have been an error, email the team.

I know it's a beta, and I'm unsure even if this is a Day of Defeat or a Half-Life issue, I just posted this in here to get the attention of the MSA community in hopes of getting more support in seeing it fixed. That's a good idea to contact the team directly though, I'll do just that.

In the mean time, everybody should post their displeasure with this bug here - http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22656

Hasn't it been like this with every Half-Life mod? Textures look sharp in the model viewer but in-game they get stretched because of the forced 256 size...that's my guess though. I wish they would implement high-resolution texture support and 44 khz sound support.

I setup a userconfig.cfg in my dod folder and put gl_max_size "512" in it and it stays at 512.

I think if you set it in the console it will revert to 256 default when you exit the game. This is the same as the tracer properties. they reset to their defaults when HL exits.

You can, like I said, get around it with the userconfig.cfg though.

Oh, and on a side note, the player models seem to be messed up. All the textures have been resized 1-10 pixels smaller than normal. So where a body texture was 512x512 it's now 507x510.

This is probably from a bad qc, or compile or something, dunno. It is really annoying though and make it hard for me to convert my skins over.

They're not using $clipto--... Um... I forget what it is, now. ARGH!!!

*puts it to 512 in his userconfig right away* Thanks, Van!

From what people have said, the setting may apprear to have changed, but the textures remain 256x256. I'll look into it though, in the mean time, perhaps you could provide screen shots showing the change between gl_max_size 256 and 512?
