[Model] - M1 Carbine

Some of you may remember the now defunct mod for HL called Rising Sun. I was the head modeler for the mod, and I managed to finish a few models before they were absorbed by Shores of Victory in what I considered a hostile takeover, anyway I managed to finish a few things before eerything went terribly wrong, and one of them was this carbine.

It weighs in at an acceptable 1256 polys before any optimization, and comes complete with two high quality 512 textures. My question to you is, should I finish a texture and release it completed, or should I release it now with just the UVW maps for others to texture?

Looks great! Why don't you just release it with your textures and the UV maps all bundled in case people want to take a stab at skinning it?

I'd do that anyway, but what I'm really wondering is should I release it now with no texture, or wait until I actually have a texture to put on it to release.

Ok, I've decided to release it now, and release the textured version when I finish it. In the mean time, anyone interested can make their own texture and release.

Don't bother downloading it if you don't plan on texturing it, as right now it's just got the UVW maps as a texture.

Nice model trigger....I've always meant to ask you, what program do you use to UV Map your models? They are always the most crisp and well thought out maps IMO.

Thanks Joe, I take great pride in what skills I have, and it's nice to see people notice. I use Maya for UV mapping, the same program I use to model. To be honest though, the only tools I use are planar mapping and sew UV's, I occasionally use cylindrical mapping if I have to, but I stick to planar as often as possible. Everything else I do by hand, it's a painstaking and tedious process that usually takes me hours to get right. So it wouldn't really matter what program I used as long as those tools were there.

I've been meaning to write a tutorial on the process, since it's one of those things that's really easy to do but everybody is scared to try so never learns. In my opinion, you're not a skilled modeler unless you can at the very least UVW map your own models. If you can texture and animate them as well, then you really know your stuff. I'd like to start animating my own models for DoD as well, but since there's no smd exporter for Maya 5.0 it's more trouble for me than it's worth.

Cant you export from Maya as 3ds then import to 3dsMax then export to smd? Oh wait....that would involve 3dsMax wouldnt it lol :) Nevermind. Thanks for the headsup though :) If you promise to have Jed's love child I think he might take a look at writing an exporter for Maya :) Its worth a shot ;)

You can export .3ds with Maya and 3DSmax, and you can import them in MS3D, 'nuff said.

I've updated the model to use Sushi's animations. They look much better with this model than the defaults, so I suggest anybody that's making a texture for it use this new version instead. Once again, everything is the same but the animations, which come from Sushi.
