Converting Player Models to 1.1

Due to the new animations used in 1.1, player models from previous versions of DoD are now incompatible with this new release, everybody already knows this I'm sure, yet there are many requests to start converting models. Due also to the number of animations used in Day od Defeat, the standard model compiler will not work with the new animations. Thus, nothing can be done until an official compiler is released, which could be a week or more, especially considering the current problems with player animations in DoD.

There is one exception to this, if the custom model you want to use is strictly a reskin, and has no model changes what-so-ever, you can import those textures into the default 1.1 models using HLMV and use it in 1.1. Everything you need for this is located in the stickies at the top of this forum.

So for all you people eagerly awaiting new player models for 1.1, you'll just have to wait a bit longer.

dont work with extra gear add in the model what if we were to use 1.0 model in 1.1 what will happen??

No models will work in 1.1 except for the default 1.1 models. In order to make any model changes, such as adding gear, they would have to be decompiled and recompiled, but as there is no compiling tool capable of handling the number of animations in 1.1, there is no way to change the player models with the exception of changing the textures.

Using older models will result in animations being displayed improperly or at the wrong times, for example, sometimes everyone is looking straight up all the time.

When will that be? In the next release? another 3 months + a day after that to get steam to download it?

Probably when the team has fixed the bugs and are sure that the internal format of the MDL files wont change again.

Note, StudioMDL as shipped with the HL SDK only supports 256 animations. DoD has 345 and therefore a custom version of StudioMDL is needed each time.

But StudioMDL is *fragile* because of the way it writes files you can't just up the limits as it screws up internal structures. Therefore customising it each time is a pain in the ass and hence this is probably why PickItUp wants to wait until everything is final first.

Will this be something regular players can do themselves? Or do we have to wait on the model authors to re-compile things?

Some knowledge of model editing and using command line tools will be needed.

From what Pick it Up has said, there will be an easy to use model converter released with the new compiler so that even if you aren't too savy you can still convert your favorite models

Curious if there's been any update on the 1.1 compiler yet?

When it's released, which should be very soon now, there will probably be a stickied post by PIU in this very forum.

I think it would be nice if site admins will get all of their custom player models (not just textures) and recompile them with the new compiler which will be out soon so the whole public can again enjoy custom player models ;]

couldn't you use cs's compiler for a temporary fix? it has 9-way blending, correct? or does the size difference between cs and dod models make a difference?

Different critters. The 9-way blending isnt the problem, as stated before, DoD uses a hefty amount of animations (356 I think was stated) If you notice, there is an animation for each specific weapon in each different pose (standing, crouching, prone etc.) CS uses a generic animation for most of the guns, ending up with less animations overall. Plus DoD is just better like that in the animation department. :) Wub to PIU.

Hell if this keeps up and we end up camping for the compiler, I'm gonna do a little comic about it. All for teh love of the Dev team of course...all in love...
