Hej all,

I posted a longer thread about this in MSA but I wanted to mention it here too as it can be used for custom maps too.

http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21210

I've written a tutorial on writing a Steam aware installer for content for any HL based mod. In your case, for custom maps you can distribute a self contained EXE which is only fractionally larger than a ZIP file, looks like a standard Windows installer and actually knows what the correct path to install files is, even down to that irritating email based folder in Steam.

The main thread lists all the main points and extra features of the installer so I wont repeat them here, but I know a few people who run custom map servers were interested in this.

Just stick w/ .zips that are set to unzip things to the dod folder. .exes lead to all kinds of issues for the casual player, often resulting in their being discouraged from custom maps.

Fancier technology is not always better.

as long as everything is standardized, then exes are just fine.

If all exes extract to /emailaddress/day of defeat/dod , then there's no difference between the exe and the zip, except for the fact that the exe is simpler.

With Steam you can't just set it to unzip to a dod folder, you have to "Browse" to it yourself.

In my experiecnce so far, the casual DoD play has no idea where their Steam DoD folder is and he just wants a custom map install file that installs the map for him, that is what this does.
