idea : a custom map league

Well, since DoD got very boring thanks to the lack of any updates, I thought about ways of making scrimming in dod more fun again. I mean, come on, I know many people like custom maps, however, even more people have problems installing them or finding a server with some players on.

Well, since there´s a strong trend of releasing custom maps which suit league play (solitude, harrington and rr2 anyone?), I thought about the possibility of a custom map league.

That would mean all matches would be played on custom maps only. The maps would be preselected and tested if they´re bugfree enough and capable of providing a good clan match experience.

The scoring system would consists of a typical roster, where all clans are put into divisions, for example 1st division, 2nd division and so on. Since custom map players are a rare sight nowadays, I think one division would be enough for the start.

Scoring would be 3 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a defeat. Just like your standard soccer rules.

You could have seasons, where each team meets two times with every other team participating in the league. The host would choose the map to play on, for 2x20 minutes, each team 20 minutes axis, 20 minutes allies. You probably know all those rules from your conventional leagues.

The only difference would be that this league would use custom maps only - a refreshing change in my opinion compared to the old Anzio/Ava/Chemille combo over and over again.

Ok, here´s a short summary of my idea again :

Summary :
=========

+ custom maps only
+ clans will be put into division(s)
+ two games for each clan against every participiated team each season
+ host chooses the map
+ playtime 2x20 minutes, each team 20 minutes axis/allies
+ win 3 pts. 1 pts for a draw and nada for a loss
+ games would be held weekly (so that you have one week to play a match, e.g. from sunday to sunday)

Realisation :
==========

+ webspace is avaible
+ european server is avaible
+ I could do the php code and web stuff (although I don´t have time for it till december)
+ the dodmaps network would support it with maps and stuff

What do I ask you to do for me :
=======================

+ Ask your clan mates if they are interested in such a league
+ We might need a american server for US matches
+ Is there interest after all in such a concept? (I don´t wanna code everything and end up with no one signing up)
+ We need admins, jugdes and stuff
+ Post your own ideas and feedback considering my idea in this thread

I´m awaiting your replies.

Before anyone flames me : Yes, I took many ideas from other, already existing leagues like the german Clanwarliga. Thanks to Berlinsturm for inspiring me so much ;) He did a great job with this league, although only a very limited range of maps are avaible there... a reason why I want to start a Custom Map League ;)

Very good idea. I could see if my clan server could be used if that would help? Not sure though as we're running our own DoD cup which should start soon.

Sunlit's DOD League just wrapped a season that began in July 2003. Plan are underway to begin another season this month. You can go HERE (http://www.halflifeofhorrors.com/sldl_main.php) to view the past season. Some of the maps that were played were Clervaux, Kraftstoff, Verdun_b4, Railroad, Belgium3 and 1939_b11 to name a few. The finals were played on Railroad and the GIMPS won the title. Check it out

BTW we still play custom maps with friendly fire on at Sunlit's Annex. Fully Steamed and ready for your digital body count.

Sounds like a good idea- it almost makes me want to be bothered to join a clan! But alas, I am not that dedicated.

Maybe clans with public servers could do something like this?

he had an aussie competition in 3.1 on custom maps..

played railroad, revolted (really good war map), hobofire, belgium, oslo and cr_44

some really good custom maps out there for wars:
harrington, solitude, cr_44, falaise, stuka, railroad 2 are just a few. next version of adrenalin (final i might add too)is hinted towards clan play a bit more...

Ok, this is what I´m going to do : I´ll post some news about this on dodmaps.com ... and I´ll open an email adress for clans who would participiate in the league. Details will be posted later! :)

Well it is nice to see some people interested in an Idea that is been out for awhile, Like Sunlit, We also have a small Startup Custom map league which just finished its first Season, called Eagle custom map League, the map list from our first season included...

dod_edge
dod_nedus_b2
dod_haunt
dod_luglio
dod_tiger
dod_ambushcombat
dod_cr44

I applaud the effort for more to get involved with these niche leagues, as Admin at eagle, like Sunlit we both do custom maps, just a different approach to class limits and game play, but always exciting, fresh new maps, and having to come up with starts for something no one has played much is always great fun...

I did not know that, my intention is not to compete with other, already existing leagues anway. Maybe we could do some kind of cooperation?

you may want to look over the rules and class limits of both groups, they differ in some areas to how they approach things,

the Custom maps have been a total blast... and breathed new life into to sme clans that have been playing DOD a long time.

I an not against a coop idea... would like to hear more...

Interesting idea, and I bet my clan would be into it. We'd play in it.

GMSF would be up for it. We can host custom maps too, and we've got a UK server.

Where are these other custom leagues based? Europe or US?

I would try to establish an European league first, since my clan is from Germany as well. However Swordkofz from the American original KK contacted me as well - he´s interested in hosting the matches for the American clans.

However, I don´t have the time at the moment to realise the project. University buries me with work. I´ll try to code the website and the design in the winter holidays in about a month.
