Well its true I am good at making up ideas and stuff like that but I am really crap at building. Ive had like 6 or more ideas on maps that could be good but its hard to build when Im not good at all.

Anyone who is good at building and stinks att making up ideas and stuff? maybe we can team up.

if u have great ideas for gameplay etc u should post ur ideas in the mapidea thread, if u have great ideas foer arcitecture, buildings, looks etc etc u should make drawing/overviews because no mapper will ever be able to understand what u mean without being able to see what u see.

yes.

Its supposed to be a kind of linear(?) map that is a bombed town with alot of hiding places and buildings you can go into.

Not bash your idea or anything but I think you just described 60% of all dod maps :P

I thought that post was a joke about the map ideas thread, now I see I was wrong....

Kehldon --- Not bash your idea or anything but I think you just described 60% of all dod maps :P ---

That is one thing that is boring there are so many maps that looks the like you have to dig deep to find something none else have done.

I think we should keep this is english TheNemises! :)

Yeah there are a few ww2 mods for hl2, but I think we differ a great deal from them since we are going for total realism with no hud, no crosshair and so on ....

Just follow the link bellow and read the about section... and you can check out the fancy media at the same time :)

My problem is that I lack stick-to-it-ness. I always make about half a map, get another idea, start on my new idea, complete about half of it, and get another idea.... I never finish anything.

Klein took the words out of my mouth.

Mapping is one of those things a lot of people can do but only a few do well...it takes more time than I can begin to explain and initially it's amazingly frustrating. You know those guys who post their early work in here? I feel for those guys because I was once one of them...they get flamed all to hell for posting their hard-earned work by folks who couldn't tell you the diff between a func_wall and a regular brush.

Glider was started in either late 1999 or 2000...I've literally put in thousands of hours into that map. Flugplatz took 3 months of hard work and minor hours later on touch-up. It took me a month and a half just to re-texture Falaise and work on some minor brush work plus conduct a half-dozen tests.

Fuzz is very right...

I once sucked at mapping terribly and was really frustrated at it.
People like SKDR.... he did a lot of mapping before he made his first reall map...

It takes time... especcially when it comes to compiling the map...

Thats where you spend some serious thinking and nearly give up..

Takes time... just fiddle with stuff do some tutorials... soon you will create your own ways of mapping etc.

Just have fun with it... never make it a job or you will et mad and angry..

FuzzDad i played with you on the falaise map and showed you some bugs :P

Well maybe I dont make a map instead i wait to HL2 and map to a mod there.

Ive had two mapping partners not to long ago but they both got tired on it and didnt to anything. Maybe I had to many ideas :)

One big problem is that I cant figure out how I do simple buildings and pussle together the texturers with windows strangly it may seem easy but for me its dang hard.

practice more until your fluent then.

Actually I think halflife2 is going to be alot harder to produce quality work with, since you can have alot more details and thus it will require more work.

Hopefully we will not se such strange behaviours as we do today with the hl1 engine, but the maps are going to require alot more time to make, even though it might come with some handy new tools ;)

Not really.

My practise with building stuff started with Bryce. It uses same kind of brush system.

My first map was one of the first experiments with Hammer.

I keep thinking I have like THE idea that I will see through to the end, but I never do. I do think I have gotten quite a bit better at mapping though, with all my half baked maps.

One thing to keep you from starting and never finishing your maps....make small ones. Silly? Yes...but true. All my maps start out as one or two places..I build small test maps all the time...like a test map to see how a particular rubble pile should sit next to a wall. Or a small outdoor area with two sections (that's how glider was started...I had the castle and the farm yard area). Making small test maps really gives you control over things like entities and brushwork...because you're not overwhelmed w/your task and it's easy to concentrate on one thing.

I also cannabilize smaller maps to fit pieces of them in newer ones...the entire axis spawn in flugplatz was pulled directly from the para_raiders map I did...there's a small busted building in the farmyard area of glider that came from another failed project of mine...dod_factory. Small steps...small movements...try and make the perfect "nice" house...then the perfect "busted up" house...then join them. Small steps...small movements.

Maybe I should just start butchering and pasting together all my half maps into something good...
