Announcing MOMMY...again

MOdelers for Map Models Yunited (so sue me, it was the best I could do...)

Since there's been a pretty crappy turnout in that thread for map models done freelance, I figured I'd just try to start a group dedicated to making map models. Hopefully this will get better results.

Basically as it stands, it'll be essentially a list of skinners, meshers, modellers, and the occaisonal animator to who will be willing to work on map models and won't just brush em off. If need be, later on we can add more strict guidelines if we don't get enough results, but for now let's just try it this way. I'll start the list, if you want to join, then state your name, any methods you can be contacted at, and what you can do, then I'll add it to this list here.

Please note, this is not a request thread, this is only for the people who are willing to join up.

The List:
Cheeto-Modeller, Mesher, Animator AIM: BigCheeto44 ICQ: 78851625 MSN and email: logana@starband.net Yahoo: cheesyfinger2k1

Rabid Whale-Modeller, Mesher Email: rabid_whale@yahoo.com

LT Joe Anderson-Modeller, Skinner Email: ltjoeanderson@aol.com

Ska Wars-Modeller Email: tuxedo_monkey86@hotmail.com

Alright, how about renaming this to 'M3' which is 'M Cubed' for Map Model Modellers. I even made us a quickie logo. :D

Hi Cheeto :D So many names I remember but didn't get to talk to :(

I'm glad to see that there's a lot of support for this idea, though we could certainly use another skinner or two here. It's also good to see some of you guys I haven't seen for awhile (Whapeh!). I have a bit of work to do this morning, but while I'm doing that I'll try to work out a system for how we'll work. After I get back I'll update the list and then tell you all what I've thought up.

Cheeto

Alright, here's what I came up with for M3.

For the most part, M3 is going to be essentially a network of members who are willing to work on map models that another member has created. So at it's core, it's method for modellers to get ahold of skinners and get something out there.

At other times (like now) then it'll operate on more of a queue system. For example: I intend to find several pictures of antique furniture, old 40's era cars, old style radios and light fixtures, and such, and then each member will take a few of those models so they're spilt evenly and work on each one. That way we can get em all done hopefully soon.

Since it's currently a pretty loose group right now, without a website or permanant method of meeting each other, then it'll remain basic. Once it gets bigger, I'll figure out some method for requests and such. But as for now, it's basically a network of modellers and skinners who we know will work on map models.

Neat idea! Models for maps are very useful and very important. Models are PERFECT for adding little 'extras' in maps without degrading performance that much.

04-27-2003, 06:45 PM
BRILLIANT!!! If this goes through, it would be awsome, i think all of us that cant model could really use this, ==.

This sounds very interesting. I'm in desperate need of a modeler for scupltures in my CS map. check out early screens at http://home.attbi.com/~mlamb11/cs_holter1.htm

If anyone's interested, dave11@attbi.com

I like this idea alot:)

Just a wee little tip: While I don't intend to have M3 just for DoD models, at the moment that's the focus, and it's the focus of these forums. So it's prolly not a good idea to have your first post on here asking for help with a CS map in a thread about DoD map models.

04-30-2003, 09:43 PM
Well, this is the first community-type idea like this I've seen so I thought I'd just mention it incase anyone is interested. Not like I'm forcing someone to make me a model. Stick to DOD if you like :)

Is anything still happening with this? We'd love some more map models over there in the mapping forums :D

And soz for pulling out an old ass thread.

Well JoeAnderson has gone *poof* with the site graphics and his girlfriend has the site's code. So I've been trying to figure out a reliable way to organize this whole thing till he gets back with the site.

06-12-2003, 03:06 PM
I'm guessing if something gets produced then there are some DoD hosts out there who'd put the page up for you. Thing is...there's got to be more commitment from the group before anyone is going to help you out.

BTW, all the webpage needs is a logo, and a few links to pages with pictures of the models simply categorized and DL links. The programming for the site should take about 15 minutes. =)

You only need about this many categories:

Vehicles
Furniture
Military Things
Outdoor Items
Misc

Anyhow, great idea and I'd love to mooch your models, but I'm kinda not seeing anything happening. At least we have a few models out there...heh.

PS I'd model myself but I hate it. Guess I'm just a mapper at heart...

I would love some mapmodels like a kubelwagen or a halftrack (at least..)

Please keep it working :)

yeah I've been absent from everything but work, school, and family for the past month or so. My father has Parkinson's Disease and I've been making sure my family has been taken care of before I do anything DOD related. I'll probably turn the code for the site over to Cheeto and just contribute to the project as much as I can but I honestly cant tell you when the site will be functional. My apologies for not keeping in touch with things.

Anderson Ouchies, was wondering why you'd left suddenly. I have Frontpage, so as long as I have a general idea of what to do, I might be able to maintain it all. But in the meantime I think I'll just use messengers to distribute stuff to the M3 members.

A website is not that important.

Why not get the group together first, start modelling and then work on a site when the models are ready for preview or release?

I think most mappers make models for *their* maps. So, it's hard for them to commit totally to creating models for others unless it suits their maps.

I create/modify an average of 1 model everytime i work on my map.

Btw, is 3dsmax worth it or issit better to stick to Milkshape 3D since MS3d has a simpler interface and allows you to get results faster? The only problem with MS3d is that u can't select vertices on the camera view!

Of course, a mapper can't really commit to creating tons of brand-new chairs/funiture models. Then again, it's possible. THat's why they need commited ones to create models most of the time.

Yeah, certain things like fences and such are map specific. But we're talking about the smaller details like radios, furniture, cups and personal items, and vehicles. Those don't really change between maps.

And I'd go with Milkshape, you CAN select vertices in 3D view (just switch to wirefram and hold down the ALT key) and it costs only 20 bucks, plus it's a hell of a lot easier to figure out.

Glidias
06-19-2003, 07:36 AM
What about Face selection on Camera view? I think the only way to do that is to select by vertex.

What about selecting within a selection???

Cheeto
06-19-2003, 08:26 AM
The SHIFT + Right or Left Click work the same in 3D view. You just have to hold down ALT as well. And what's wrong with selecting faces by vertex? If you get one you don't want, just de-select it.
