I still think it's based off that RTCW map...not that it's a bad thing, mind you.

Actually, i believe it was based on a WW2 movie with Clint Eastwood. (forgot the title). There was this one scene where they sneak inside the fortress on top of a railcar, and climb up the side, and into the window, where they find a German lady, who helps the two guys (clint and another dude) disguise themselves as german officers.

That's one great looking map. Has very nice detail.
One question though. Can you ride the trams like in RTCW? If so than this map just got 10x better.

Tolchok

Whoopy42 - Thanks.

Shane - Next release is a mapmodel - I'm just learning milkshape. After that will be a wadfile with most of the Festung textures, and a lot of others. Then, another map I've been working on, which I'll preview in a bit.

skdr - No.

2ltben - No, it's based on the film 'Where eagles dare'. I finished the original map between the RTCW release dates for the US and Europe (special version for Europe, without swastikas, apparently) I'm in England, and I finished the map before RTCW was released here.

kleinluka - Thanks.

Mythic_Kruger - Thanks, keep an eye peeled for the .wad.

Doc Orange - Best WWII film of all time. I wanted to get a helicopter in (not a Bell with a swastika on it), but entity limits wouldn't allow.

Marauder - The objective of the map is for the Allied POWs to escape in the cablecar, and the Axis to stop them.

I really want to see Where Eagles Dare, but when it IS on I never get the time to watch it. It's right under A Bridge Too Far on my list.

Amazing map ! totaly cool, i loved the idea :D

about the fps thing, i dunno but i had 100 :-)

If your fps is so low now then it's probably due to the snow, just turn weather effects off or something.

this picture looks like Outer Space. I was thinking maybe it looks kinda like it becos of the snow, which gives the appearances of lots of stars. Perhaps, it wouldn't appear so ingame as the snow would be falling. I would definitely play it with fog, though!!

Anyway, great map nice to see it in v1.0!!

APPROACH #1: You could convert your Hammer geometry into a proper clean .mdl like what i happend to do with your prefab truck (sorrie, if you didnt know bout this or aksed for permission, but i simply ported it over to a different format! http://www.dayofdefeat.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11030&highlight=.rmf+.mdl). (

APPROACH #2: But i guess it's good to learn modelling purely in Milkshape or perhaps a program like 3Dsmax.

Remember you also need to do skinning and UV mapping with whatever approach you use. I suggest you use LithunUnwrap.

The reason why FPS might be low for some is that iirc he hasnt used standard DOD particle snow, but the conveyor method of snow, so all that snow is a criss cross grid of func_conveyors which will make the fps go to pot for some, and it cant be turned off.

Tolchok

Glidias - I actually came across your instructions for converting worldcraft brushes into models when I was doing a search here. I followed the steps and found it a most useful procedure - I can now convert some of my worldcraft prefabs that never saw the light of day. Also, no problem about the truck - I missed it at the time, so nice job. I'll be doing a fully detailed .mdl version of it after I release what I'm working on.

Ginger Lord - I actually used both the conveyor method, and particle snow because I'm greedy. I wanted a much denser snowfall than the particle snow, so I originally had just the conveyors, but inserted the particle snow to help fill in the empty boxes left by the grid of the conveyors. So, turning off the weather effect will give back some fps, and leave you with some snow.

Here are the lyrics to the great song "Where Eagles Dare" by Iron Maiden.

It's snowing outside the rumbling sound
of engines roar in the night.
The mission is near the confident men
are waiting to drop from the sky.

The Blizzard goes on but still they must fly
No one should go where eagles dare.

Bavarian alps that lay all around
they seem to stare from below.
The enemy lines a long time passed
are lying deep in the snow.

Into the night they fall through the sky
No one should fly where eagles dare.

(long Guitar solo + battle sounds)

They're closing in the fortress is near
it's standing high in the sky.
The cable car's the only way in
it's really impossible to climb.

They make their way but maybe too late
They've got to try to save the day.

The panicking cries the roaring of guns
are echoing all around the valley.
The mission complete they make to escape
away from the Eagles Nest.

They dared to go where no one would try
they chose to fly where eagles dare.

Tolchok,

Glad to see you stuck with this wonderful map and re-released a 1.0 compatible version. I think everyone should have it in their collection as it is a truly unique DoD experience. Looking forward to your next one.

This is definately one of the best custom maps from the 2.1-3.1 era. I havent played this newest version yet, but if its as good or better than the originals, I definately suggest submitting this to the DoD team.

Looks very good, will add mirror asap.
Btw is this the FINAL or not?

Tolchok
09-29-2003, 10:04 AM
German Killa - Thanks for the mirror.

Izuno - Cheers m8. I'm just relieved to get it finished - what I thought would take me a few weeks turned into an epic marathon, especially creating the new textures, and getting the cablecar working properly again. As for the next map, I've got something interesting in the works :)

DSettahr - Thanks. Try to catch a game - I think the changes will make it significantly better than previous versions.

RA7 - Yes, it's the final version.

I downloaded this map last night. It looks awesome but you might have to work on your r_speeds. At some points I had 20fps with 1200 w_poly and it was only me on the level.

I haven't had a change to test playability yet so no comments there.

Keep up the good work though.

Regards,
TECHNOR

Thanks Technor - yes the w_polys climb to 1200 when you are escaping in the cablecar and facing the castle. Since this is only for a very short time, I didn't worry about it much. Now Glidias has enlightened us with the technique of replacing world brushes with models, I'll look into replacing some of the station world brush details with models, for a possible future release.
