basically you take the screen shot of your map from the top, then using a paint program you re-draw the layout so its relative to your map, but is very stylised.

A someone said, they are overviews. In fact the whole mini-map system is a derivation of the overview map you get in Spectator mode.

We just didn't think that the "screenshot" look was that great for these. The paper map look was much better. We went through a lot of variations until we got this "look" we liked.

As Kami states, it was done in Paint Shop Pro. About 10-12 layers (one for the grid, one for the "folds", one for paper texture, one for roads, one for buildings, one for "smudges", etc.). John (PickItUp) and I did them together, each working on different parts of them.

I dunno if it's 100% fine with Valve, but if it's OK by them I can release the different layer images. This gives you a good starting point. No reason why you couldn't do them in Photoshop as well.

please
new custom maps with crappy "normal" overviews would kill the feeling of them :/

also release some things like those cool trees you used to mark map boundaries and things :)

Actually the "Tree" thing is just the paint brush set to black, size varying from 8 to 48, and then whatever that setting is that makes it "Fragmented" (broken up). THen just click and sort of splatter them down. THe key is to vary the sizes and randomize it nicely.

Hey waldo, can you release all the layer thingys, so we can use 'em?

EDIT: check out the one I just made with a combination of MS paint and Photoshop (too dumb to figure out how to do it all in photoshop :D )

Never touched Photoshop ever in my life

Well i had to mark on the pubs....all these new people might get lost without their map and/or common sence to look around a map first.

Were the mini-map graphic files already released? Am I missing something here?

I took the avalanche one, found a small patch that wasn't drawn on, and didn't have any sains or anything so it would tile well and then I just copied and pasted it a bunch of times till I could cover the entire center, then I just pasted a black and white overview of my map on it. I don't think waldo released the files he used to make it.
