[MWIP] Animated/Expression faces

Hej All,

Been a bit quiet modelling wise what with HLMV and all but i'm always up to something. Anyway, fresh from "The Lab" comes my latest creation.

I posted a teaster thread a while ago about doing facial animation in DoD and have now finshed experimenting and started rigging up my airborne models to use it.

Its labourious stuff and its going to take me a while to get all the face animations done but I'm getting there.

I know people are thinking whats the point, but its just another touch of realism and I'm always trying to do something different and see how far I can push things in DoD.

Anyway, attatched is a JPEG showing a sequence of frames from dod_jagd when shooting the Sten Mk5 and it shows of the animation quite nicely.

At the start what you see is the sten_aim anim with both eyes open with a neutral expression. When you then fire the sten, the sten_shoot anim is used and because of HL's animation blending we get the good stuff! :D

Our para puts on his fighting face by frowning, closes one eye, squints a little with the other and looks down the sights of the weapon! After he's finished firing his eyes open and his expression returns to normal.

This is actually the most basic of the animations I've done and so far have added face animations to all of the death and idle anims. When dying the player will wince or raise his eyebrows in shock before slowly dropping to the ground dead with his eyes close.

The idle anims are as before but with the addition of the odd blink now and the and look around.

Anyway, heres the JPEG.

I made an animated gif from DoD showing the face animation a little better.

It's 500Kb so you should probably save it to you desktop first. I'll probably delete it soon to save bandwidth on my server - so if anyone can make it into decent size WMV please do!

Slick, I like it, the DoD team should pick up on some of the ideas that come out of these boards.

Well its getting there.

I can't do much to the movement anims (crawl, walk, jog, etc) as when exporting from milkshape it causes a stutter and ruins the anim so those will have a fairly blank stare. The rest is just going through all the other and trying to give the relevant expressions for the animations really.

Death anims are all done - they either wince or looked shocked and lie dead with their eyes closed. Idle anims move their eyes about, blink, etc. I also tweaked a few of the movement anims where the model doesnt move too much to add face movement.

The only process that's left now is to go through every weapon anim and set-up the shooting expression. 300+ anims to do but luckily because of Half-Lifes anim blending I only need to set the expression on the first frame so not too bad.

Once I've tested and I'm happy with them I might have a go and rigging the default DoD models to use these anims and moving mouths.

I know its hard to see the face animations in game but if your making DoD movies their pretty cool or better still if your holed up behind sandbags with your teammates and you see the expressions.

I'll make another movie soon because I did a test tonight from standing to prone, crawling and then firing the sten. The range of facial movement is insane! :D

Oh, I'm also untwisting all the broken fingers in the anims so maybe when I'm done I'll release a modified animation set for people to compile with that doesnt have everything all busted up.

Well I've hit a small snag in that its crashing studiomdl when compiling now. I think I've hit some sort of limit within it and I need to tweak it.

I've already opened the source for Studiomdl from the HL SDK and altered it to handle the 364 odd anims from DoD but its crapping out trying to compile in the texture and I'm not sure whats going on really.

Shame really because all I had left to do what the weapon shoot expressions.

I've asked Waldo if I can get a copy of the source for the DoD studiomdl compile and see if I can tweak it from there.

Holy crap, excellent work my friend. Ummm...just curious, will I be able to add these to any of my models, just by replacing the animations, or will I have to dl a pack you release?

wow jed u do everything!
model edittings, brit paras, HLMV remix (lol), and now animated expressions like in Madden 2004 (only game i could think that has it)!

Trp. Jed
09-30-2003, 03:45 AM
LOL. Make a change, most people say it looks like BF1942.

As for adding them to your models - you would need to use my animations as theres about 8 extra bones you need.

You could use my skeleton but you would have to build your model around a template face. I was toying with the idea of maybe releasing it anyway. It will basically be the eyelids, eyes, eye sockets, eyebrows and mouth in the template. You would have to merge it with your model, delete the relevant faces from your head model and re-work it to fet around the parts in the template, then of course fix the UV Map for your texture.

Anyway, as I said right now it works, its just I've hit a limit in StudioMDL with compiling so there are only face anims on the sten shoot. Until I can make a version of StudioMDL to pass the limit I cant add any more. But all the idle, death and some of the movement anims have face movements.

If it isn't too much work, may I suggest taking a survey for the top most 3 popular Allied/British/Axis model packs, and add these animations to them? Such as, Devin Kryss' Axis pack. :D

I say we make the ultimate player models.

Top player models for british, axis, and allies used
Add in moving mouths, expressions, and the cool headshot anim that was done a while back.
Possibly use the hi poly hands that were worked on (don't know what happened to em though, or if they were ever released)

Any how, good job Jed! :D

Just curious how odd these might look at full auto? I mean..so far it looks great for single/slow shooting...but up close wouldn't it look odd to see him doing the exact same thing 100 times a minute?

The way the Half-Life engine blends the animations he doesnt open his eyes until after you stop firing or run out of ammo.

If you fire on auto he keeps his eye closed throughout.

BTW, the reason I havent released it yet is because I was working on the installer and I hit the 2Mb limit for STUDIOMDL and I havent yet managed to custom compile a new version.

Worst case is that I'll have to leave the shooting expressions out.

Like how old is this thread?

Yes, i'm stilling working on a few things. I got screwed over by the 1.1 compiler issue and the change to 9 way animation blending plus I'm still having inssues with studiomdl because i'm pushing the limits a bit.

I'm still prepping the model ready for it but i'll probably wait until 1.2 to be sure the animations having changed again before I can be confident that i'm not going to have to start over.

I'll post some pics of the rigged model once its done - i'm doing some re-skins to go with it.

Dont get excited you wont seem them any time soon. The studiomdl compiler craps out compiling them. I assume its a memory leak somewhere and it can't handle the extra bones needed which is a shame because the PS2 version of Half-Life uses something similar.

In short, if the compiler could handle it I could use them but it cant so I wont.

Trp. Jed
09-25-2004, 05:48 PM
The irony....

I just figured out what the memory error is in the compiler and I can get them to compile now.

Maybe I'll try and add animated faces to the Airborne Redux models at some point.

Facial expressions are ALOT harder than mouth controllers.

Errr wow. You should of just started a new thread because nothing in this one is relevent to what you're doing.

Seriously, this was the Goldsource/HL1 engine and I did it all with bones rigged to make a mask inside the head mesh. Ther were no tools like that for Goldsrc.

As for custom facial expressions, if its for DoD:S or CS:S forget it, the sanity checks probably wont allow them anyway and certainly those two games don't use them.
