Right click on the dodge tool and select the burn tool. Btw, you should learn photoshop before you start skinning.

Well, the BAR foregrip has a ridge at the top and bottom. Use the dodge tool on highlights and 35% exposure and sparingly dodge at the top of each ridge, and use the burn tool on highlights (35% exposure again) and lightly burn under each ridge. After you dodge the top, switch the dodge tool to shadows (15% exposure this time) and dodge over the original dodge marks VERY SPARINGLY. Remember to make the highlights stronger at the point where your light source is coming from, for example if your light source is coming from the top left, then you'll want to dodge stronger at the top left of the ridges.

I find it easier to use different layers over top of the wood texture.

for shadows create a new layer that’s completely transparent or completely white. set its blend mode to "multiply" and its opacity to something low, you can play with the value to see what looks good .then grab a black paint brush and start coloring away.

For lights I create a separate layer that is completely transparent. Set its blend mode to "hard light" and its opacity to some low value. Then paint with a white brush

The “gradient” tool also comes in handy for creating lighting and shadows on rounded objects.

This is the wood texture from my Garand skin.

The gradient tool makes those pieces looks like bumps...

Right, but you can achieve the same effect by just dodging and burning. It looks better and is much easier.
