Steam and custom content

All the various posts, predictions and FUD about Steam has got me a bit lost. However in more than one post I've seen references to the fact that Steam possibly re-orgonises or "converts" existing mods you have installed.
I have no idea what is involved in this conversion process but does anyone know if the new Steam client will have any effect on custom content?
Will it just be a case of our models, etc. will be simply stored in a different folder or will STEAM put them in PAK's or some other sort of mechanism?

The Steam beta used files called "gcache.gcf", which all game content is stored within (since the gcache.gcf is 400mb big for the CS 1.6 beta). I guess you can place custom models/sprites/maps in the correct folders to make them take effect, as it's in original half-life: everything is stored in pak-files, but the files in the folders override the content in the pak-file. My guess is that if you want to return to original model on , for example, the Garand, you just delete the v_garand.mdl i models and then the garand model in the cache-file (or what ever it may be in the Steam final) is used. I don't know for sure, but we can just hope.

I just tested this out after installing Steam with the DoD cache files.
All I did was copy my player model folder. Went into the Steam\SteamApps\email\Day of Defeat\dod folder, created a models folder and pasted the players folder inside. Joined server and my custom models were there. I then went back and renamed the models folder !models and rejoined game and they were back to defaults.
Have not tried this out with any of the menu gfx or sprites but should work. (Also handy for BFE where it has to be reverted to default models :D)

One thing i can't seem to get working is my custom hud.txt, i can't get my custom crosshair to work properly without the hud.txt. But when i copy the hud.txt to the sprite dir, it does not make a difference, anyone have any ideas where i should put the hud.txt.

I just put my whole dod folder from my retail version in the day of defeat folder. Let me explain a little better.
1)Copied the dod folder from retail version.
2)Pasted it in my email folder.
3)renamed it dod1
4)put it in the day of defeat folder
5)renamed the dod folder to dod2
6)renamed the dod1 folder to dod
7)opened game and I got custom x-hair and all models
8)switched the files again, and got all defaults back
Thats what I do... it works fine for me!

Sprites and sounds work, too. Everything except the startup mp3, and that bug shoudl be ironed out soon.
You guys haven't had any crashes? I get my custom sprites in there, play for about 5 mins, then it freezes up on me. I remove them, and all is fine.
I cant get the crosshairs to work with the sprites folder... do i have to make a sprites folder then put my sprites folder inside of it?
