Just thought I'd post this here.
I've just finished my POV-Ray 3.5 export plug-in for Milkshape and I'm currently writing up a tutorial on how to use it in conjunction with POV-Ray to produce model preview's that look kind of like the ones produced by "Brazil".
I'm talking about nice ray-traced renders with diffuse shadows and transparent textures that really make them look good.
The tutorial goes through all the steps, shows you how to do a posed model (no more "arms out, legs together" stuff), how to use transparent textures and a bunch of other useful stuff.
The good news is that the plug-in is free (well donationware really) and so is POV-Ray. :)
