3ds to v_model.mdl

I have made a gun model (garand) in 3dstudio max. Exported it as a .3ds file.

I've decompiled the v_garand.mdl file and get a whole bunch of smd files.

Where do i go from here? How do i get the model working with the all the animations and eventually compiled for use in the game.

Tutorials or links would be helpful. I've read these stickies but they don't really make sense.

This is what it looks like. Warning this render has an extremely high amount of faces. I originally just wanted to model a Garand for fun, never considered using it in a game.

Thanks.

Though I can't help with the problem, I might say that garand looks really nice! I'll be watching this thread!

I've had exactly the same problem.

I've resolved this problem exporting my models and importing them in milkshape.

You 'll probably be disappointed when you'll see how ugly they look in milkshape.

This isn't the best solution, but it's the only way I've found

Sorry can't really help you there, but I must say that that is a sweet looking garand :)

Well, you need to export that model into something that MS3d can import. Preferably an .smd. Then, you need to open the garands ref file, and import your model into it too. Assign the bones to your garand, move yours over the original, delete the original, export, and compile.

I cant tell from the pic, but if all you did is model the garand, does that mean you also meshed it and skinned it? It needs to be meshed and skinned before you can make it into a v_mdl.

in other words.........

1) check out the original reference.smd file's various weapon bone assignment. (by import various animation smd and see whic bone moves the trigger, the bolt .... etc)

2) import ur new model over the original one. Delete the old one and start reassigning the the various movable weapon parts bones.

3) try import 1 or 2 animation smd file to see if everything is in place....

4) say a prayer and compile it. :D

I was planning on skinning it later. I just want to make sure i know how to actually get it working in the game first.

I have no idea what meshing is. That model is rendered straight from 3d studio max, splines that have been surfaced.

Thanks for the help.

Meshing means UVmapping. Somone has to go and make UVmaps for your model, so someone can skin it proper. Coloring the render wont work ingame.

The one rendered there...about 30,000 :)
I've since got it down to about 4000. I'll try get it a bit lower.

The reason i modelled it was because i wanted to re-create a first person perspective dod scene in 3d studio. So people could imagine what a game like Dod would look like in about 10 years.

I might finish it one day.

can you keep it at 4000? It doesnt need to go lower.

Well i have finally got it to compile and working in game. I spent ages cutting down the polygons/vertices. I also figured out how to skin it using a plugin called Textporter for 3dsmax. It looks really bad btw since it's the first time i've skinned anything :/. I always just use materials in 3dsmax. It's not even screenshot worthy at this stage.

Anyway, the next thing it needs is to be tapered at the end.

It will be released eventually and someone can skin it properly.

I imported a .3ds file into milkshape, and it looks fine in milkshape, i did everything right, except when i look at the compiled model in hlmv or ingame the gun is inside out...like it only draws the backfaces...

anybody know what i did wrong?
