Did Potato Mashers ever make a sound when the pin is pulled?

To my knowledge the "patato masher" or stick grenade 24 never used a pin.It consisted of a hollow wooden staff with a pull-out string, fuse and detonator.

Later into the II WW. The Germans brought out the "Handgrenade 39" ... it was an egged shaped hand grenade, i would think that worked with a pin pretty much like any modern day gernade.

Now there's a man who knows his munitions.
