hi ive read a few tutorials on craters and they err confused the hell out of me, can someone put a link crater positive so i can simple copy it and carve it into the ground, thanks.
1. Never use the carve tool
2. Make each side of the crater speratly.
basically cut a square hole in the floor. sink it down and cap it off. IE take a standard box remvoe the top peice and place it under the hole. NOTE: always use a box even if its a 5 sided crater!
Then inside the hole draw wedges which you vertex edit into the shape of your crater. null the unseen faces and make it an entity.

of........course............how simple......can i have that in newbie?
ok take a flat brush. Split the brush into 3 strips split the center strip into 3 mroe strips but at 90 degres to your last cuts. move the middle peice down about 32 units. draw some walls below the floor that reach down center brush. now, inside this area place some wedge shapped brushes. arange them likes spokes. if you want your hole to have more than 4 sides place some in the corners to make it 8 sided or whatever you prefer. take the center of the wedges in the spokes and lower the center down to to floor level. the combine all the wedges into 1 func_wall.
Ok first of all, Beaver forgot to say use only triangles, only. So you have a square. Cut it up into 4 triangle pieces. So your your square has 4 triangles, that all meet in the middle (just use the clip tool from corner to corner).
Now click the vertex manipulation button and move the white dots in the middle straight down for all 4 triangles(make sure the white dots on the bottom stay beneath the dots on the top, if you do, it will give a "Invalid solid structure" error).
Just keep doing this, and if you want more sides, just cut up the square into more pieces.
EDIT: Angry and I have 2 different types of craters, his might be considered more detailed, and mine a bit easier. But they both are done the same
