What do most of you Modellers use?

To model? I'd like to try and I want to know what program most of you guys use. I've tried installing GMAX but it's giving me some crap, so that's not going to work.

if your only starting to model now, i would say milkshape. it is quite easy to understand and learn.

i would assume most of the more experienced modelers use 3d max

Wow my computer's a piece of **** Maya requires 512MB of RAM... I only have 256 MB, this sucks, I can't even run a modelling program. Whatever, I'll still try it.

I only have 256 and Im able to run it. 512 is probably just the recommended RAM...

I started with 3dsmax 2.0 and I'm still using 3dsmax, although 4.0 :)

Btw 3dsmax4 runs in a 150mhz pentium without a 3dcard.

I've been modelling for a couple years now and I use Milkshape. It's easy to use, easy on the wallet and computer, is made specificallly for games, and has a huge amount of file formats plugged in for it. It doesn't have all the features of Max or Maya, unfortunately. So modelling complex objects or animating can be fairly tricky. I've thought of trying Max or Maya, though. I hear Maya is easy for Milshapers to learn.

I also seem to remember that Vassago used Lightwave, which I didn't like at all.

And wtf is SoftImage?

I've never tried SoftImage myself, but I hear professional animators swear by it.

I tired 3DSMax but its too full of bloat for my liking.

I use Milkshape 3D and LithUnWrap for UVW mapping.
You can use GMAX but you'll need the MaxScript plug-ins to read/write SMD files.
