[MREL] British/Canadian Airborne models for 1.0
Trp. Jed

The silences is so deafening you could hear a pin drop as the world collectively takes in a sharp breath and mutters to itself - "I dont believe it, Jed actually released the airborne models..."
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the most overhyped model release the forums has ever known...
I wont bore the new guys here with the long story behind these models and the hassles I've gone through getting them done since 3.1b. Needless to say, those in the know are probably nodding their heads silently in agreement. This has been a labour of love for almost half a year now and has been the only thing thats kept me going during my 6 months of illness.
However I've been doing them for too long now, I'm sick to death of the sight of them and if I keep tweaking them any more they'll just get worse.
Well, as Mr. T would say, "'nuff jibba jabba foo"...
This release contains....
- British/Canadian Airborne player models with helmets or berets (you choose)
- Moving mouths
- Replacement Sten Mk5 p_model with correct animations
- Replacement sounds for the Bren and Sten
- A fix for the default Enfield to stop it being mis-held during the firing cycle
And before I give you the link, please respect the effort thats gone into these by not hacking them to pieces and releasing bad hackjobs based on them.
Well here you go kids, be nice to them...

Paying my hospital bills actually. Like I said I havent been able to work since February because of illness and being an imigrant in Sweden I dont get that much help from the government. I've already lost 14lb in weight from eating noodles for a month! Lifes turning into and SAS E&E course.. :mad:

Did I not mention that I re-did the SAS pack? Same quality/detail as the Airborne ones and yes, with the comfort cap. I didnt release it as I predominately made it for my DoD clan and I didnt want to start annoying everyone else who's making britpacks with all my releases.

I don't think anyone blames you for taking a break jed lol You've bloody earned it. Hope you get better soon mate, your a bloody good modeller and a seemingly bottomless well of knowledge of WW2 British stuff lol
I made a Mk5 sten hack job a while back but it was a piece of ****. You can get it at dodsupply (http://www.dodsupply.co.uk) if you want it but you'd probally be best waiting to see if jed makes one as it will no doubt be better than mine.

These make me want to go and watch a Bridge too Far :) Not sure if it was the same division, but they look very similar. This is some of the sweetest work I have seen for DoD ever. I'm gonna have to do the old trick of having two installations of dod again because BFE doesn't allow custom player models. These are so good I have to see them in-game.
Is it possible to make it so the Sergeant Major is wearing a beret and the rest have helmets? I really liked that about Klown's 3.1 pack, dunno if it was historically accurate, but it looked cool.
Once again, outrageously good.
Spork
06-30-2003, 04:26 AM
ooo ahhhh :eek:
Berets were worn by all in special units like the airborne not just the sergeants. But in battle they used their helmets like everyone else. What I'd love to see if the Bren gunner being a member of the "Gilder Pilot Regiment" This may sound strange but when they landed their gliders the pilots fought alongside the troops they brought down until it was possible for them to be shipped home. They were both fully trained airborne soldiers and pilots trained by the RAF, not to mention they were all NCOs or officers.
They were also allowed to chose their own weapons and equipment before going into the action and many chose Bren's as they would be doing time on the front line and a Bren is a good thing to have when in a foxhole
Great Work m8. All your hard work has really paid off, thanks for makin theses as perfect as you know how. Amazing!

Beautiful. Simply Beuatiful. I've never ever even downloaded any custom british player models. I was planning on hacking me some sort of crazy totally unrealistic british commandos. But i've changed my mind, I'll just use these. I've been waiting for these since 1.0 came out, and there was a reason to use british player models. You did a fine job, especially with the invisible textures on the helmet scrim, but I'd have to say that the strap looks somewhat odd, its not actually strapped to his head, it looks very loose.
Never the less, I love it.
And lets hope you feel a lot better.

Well the problem with 1.0 is that the British class allows for 2 types of headgear but its only the sniper that can have different head gear to the rest.

Umm, thats because its not meant to be strapped to his head. :rolleyes:
Their supposed to be a a bit worn out looking, a bit dirty and battle worn but bear in mind, in combat you'd be nuts to have your helmet strapped to your chin.
Why? Because the concussion from a nearby mortar or grenade going off would whip your helmet back and probably break your neck. Better to leave it unstrapped and let it fly off than kill you.

Wow, I just checked the server logs - 677 downloads so far. I hate to think what my bandwidth usage is going to be like this month.
Oh, and if anyone from Half Rules at http://213.172.59.11/ is reading this SORT YOUR BLOODY SITE OUT! :mad:
Some PHP script your running has been continually hitting my server downloading the screenshot pictures over and over again.
Nice try "amigo" - your IP address is blacklisted from the server. I hope you've got enough hard disk space for your error logs.

You could easily make it so the sarge only has a beret or even give each class its own headgear. the only problem would be that you wouldn't be able to have helmets fly off as you would add the helmets to the head model.

Thanks for the compliment but if they asked to included them I'd say no.
I'm not 100% behind DoD/valve since the take over and 1.0 plus to be honest, I dont like the idea of somebody else getting rich of my efforts.
Hence the donations link on the download page was just a way for YOU guys to say "thank you" if you want to and it was a way for me to cover the costs of all the books and my flight to the Airborne museum to do research for the models.

Does anyone want me to convert these models to replace the American Infantry/Airborne models for the US maps? And if so, do you want me to hack the anims so they use British instead of American weapons (in p_view at least).
Weapon map would be:
Enfield = Garand
Carbine = Carbine (the Brits did use it)
Thompson = Thompson
Sten = Greasegun
Bren = BAR
.30Cal = .30Cal

i originally d/led the brits w/ berets, but i kept getting em confused w/ the fez-wearing gerbesjager (sp?) pack i use...
for this reason im using the helmeted brits.
Hmm.. It's a good pack.
Myself, being a re-enactor for the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion... I can say that you need to find a better texture for the Over Smock on the Canadian Airborne skin, it just doesn't seem as detailed as the one I have...
Otherwise, pretty good job.

You got any idea how hard it is to recreate Dennison from scratch? Its the fact its a hand painted texture and it has so many subtle variation that makes it a bit of a hassle.
As for "finding" a better texture - its hand drawn from scratch, none of this cheapo phototexture rubbish. :D

Sounds like a genius idea to me. The old brit pack made me so much better with the garand because the Enfield animation forced me to take my time between shots to aim. I'm not sure about the sten = greasegun, the tommy would be a better match, maybe have two models of sten one for each. The rest sounds very good
if u done that with the Para maps, wudnt it mess up the normal US maps, GIs running around with enfileds n stens? otherwise, yus plz!

Yeah it would do to a degree. On a model by model basis I can still right the standard GI's to use the Garand, Carbine, etc. anims and the Para's to use the Brit weapon anims, its just borks up because of the p_models.
I'll think it over. I might just make Brits using US weapons.
