In between making updates to dod_glider (I read the threads and I've just about finished with all the fixes) I've been polishing off dod_flugplatz and should release the updated map soon. The Spies guys ran a nice test for me a few days ago and after a few additions (some detail in the hanger and more sandbag entities) I'm almost ready to let this puupy fly (btw...it's lighter in-game than these pics suggest):

Quite nice indeed.

You may want to add some light to few areas tho. Like in this picture.

http://users.invasionworks.com/~fuzzdad/images/flug5.JPG

Those wall lights should do the job :)

And yea. might be lighter ingame but still lights give some nice atmosphere to it.

That pic is a corner of the axis spawn and what you don't see is the light from the parking shed door below you...and as I said the lighting in game is plenty bright in those area's it needs to be...I do love the textured lights though so let me see if I can spare a few near there....but trust me when I say there's plenty of light...we've had multiple playtests and not a single person has said anything about it being too dark...i think i had my monitor turned down a bit when i took those...it would look nice to have a lithg there though...just to make the area "coolness" factor go up i suppose.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun.

This is a really fun and interesting map. So much nice little detail that make it a great play. I love the addition of the plane parts here and there, being able to destroy the planes, etc...

W/ the changes you're making now, I don't know that there'll be much more to do. :)

<Not sure, FD, if you saw all the comments we had, but a few more were added on Sat and/or Sunday.>

the only flaw I see is, that you spelled "hangar" wrong on the overview map. you spelled "hanger".

but who gives a damn.
looks nice

Well, it imo not on the same level as your high quality retail map dod_glider, but itīs definately one of the more playable custom maps. We had good battles on it at the dodmaps.com custom maps server, so I am looking forward to this upgrade. good job!

Lol...i love glider like the next guy...but other than Jagd the objective maps are not played as often as the flag-cap maps...my bet is that if this map ever went official it would play twice as much as glider...this updated version is much better than the one i released already...it's tighter, faster, and more stuff is going on (still trying to figure out a cool easter egg though).

06-17-2003, 06:42 AM
Wow, love the update. I can't wait to play this version, good work! :D

Rotkopf
06-17-2003, 06:49 AM
Fuzzdad : I may correct you on that, Glider is imo quite popular because of itīs objective based gameplay. People actually try to work in teams instead of performing runīnīgun actions. But hey, Jagd is only popular because both teams have a Kar.

No, jagd is good because it has a well made layout and objectives. It'd be good to if it were Americans vs Germans! I dont wanna hear that the only reason jagd is good is cause both teams have a "kar" now back on topic. :D

*EDIT*
Even if it was a joke its still a slap in the face to the maker(s) of the map.

FuzzDad
06-17-2003, 08:55 AM
Nah...rot and I go way back...he really likes the objective-based maps (as do I)...I'm commenting on the lack of players on most of the objective-based maps (jagd not included)...if you believe server statistics (like ASE) then most DoD players prefer the run-and-gun maps like caen, avalanche, flash...etc.

Flugplatz is my attempt to capture that playstyle...although I don't have as many open buildings as those maps do, I did pay a huge amount of attention to map balance so for every apparent advantage for one side I built an opposite advantage for the other side...a ying for every yang (heheh...kar-enfield-kar-enfield-kar-enfield). Since the Spies guys did me a favor in testing i posted a fairly extensive list of the changes I made up on their website so head over to www.spies.com for details (go to their forum...you'll find the flugplatz thread).

I'll have a version ready for testing tonight or tommorrow...waiting on a British flag-banner texture...this should be a final release (unless something disastourous takes place...or I feel the need to add more cool stuff to the map).

Godcha: I'll need to send you the map files first so you can adjust your Sturmbot waypoints...I've added a few things to the hanger and slightly adjusted some of the rubble pieces. I also noticed that the brits tend to go in their side of the hanger...cap the plane...then exit back out the way they came...instead of continuing on through the hanger to the next flag.

This link (http://www.spies.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=45) should take you to the DoD forum FD mentioned.

Yeah, the changes are impressive. I'll be quite happy to do another test for you FD. I'll be off/on chat tonight, look me up. :)

BTW, on the whole objective vs. flag things, FD is right, straight flag caps get played more often. I think this is because the general public has a very brief and stunted learning curve. Give them something too complicated and they'll just let drop it. That said, Glider is pretty popular on our server. Its one of my favorite maps.

Even w/ custom maps the most popular custom maps of 2.1/3.1 days were Railroad and cr44_b3, both of which featured quick, straight forward gameplay in brightly lit environments.

One of the nice things about Glider is that between the 1.0 bugs and the heavier burden 1.0 puts on systems, Glider runs very efficiently. I can play it and not have to worry that my FPS will suddenly drop and I'll freeze up then wake up dead. I want to like maps like Forest, but it brings my PC to its knees.

Also, one thing that I think people don't realize about gameplayers and maps is this simple fact: No matter how great the maps are in 1.0, the public will always focus on about 3 maps and play those into the ground. Again, its the whole learning curve/attention span thing. Its easier for them to identify 3 maps they like and stick w/ them to the bitter end.

Think of other games you play, be it TFC, CS, whatever... Each of them has about 3 maps that consume about 80-90% of all server playtime.

What does this mean? Well, I few things...
1. Just because a map isn't in that "top 3" doesn't mean its not great.
2. People shouldn't necessarily aspire to make their maps "just like Caen" (fyi, I'm saying this generally, in no way is this a comment about Flugplatz or how FD maps). If all 15 maps in 1.0 werwe all the same and just had different names, I promise you, there would still be 3 that were played 90% of the time. I think one of the best things in 1.0 is the map variety. The different themes, looks, and playstyles make the map selection a strong point.

... ok, I'm outta gas ATM. :)

I think playing the same maps over and over again gets boring quickly. Thatīs the reason I run a custom maps server. Mostly clan players tend to play the same maps (espicially Anzio and Jagd) over and over again because they want to maximize their skills on a few maps which are usually played in clanwars, but I find it always amusing when they fail to perform well on any other map. I like to play new maps because they offer me some kind of new challenge, a different battleground to play on or just something an original retail map couldnīt be. A custom map has none of the limitations concerning size, r-speeds or objective design a official map has to obey.

And thatīs the reason why I am looking forward to every good custom map. :)

06-17-2003, 02:18 PM
thatīs the way people make custom maps :D

Looks good FD, less counter-strikey! :)

I wonder why some maps just get played more often than others? When I've played CS, and the mapchange goes to something like the-map-with-the-crashed-aeroplane (god thats a bad map) and other players are like "I've never played this map before". Is it just random chance that people discover a couple of maps and never play anything else??

Was wondering what folks thought of this flag/banner treatment:

http://users.invasionworks.com/~fuzzdad/images/flug9.JPG
http://users.invasionworks.com/~fuzzdad/images/flug10.JPG

The plane is a cap point...i didn't want to have a flag on the plane so I came up with these banners...they swap out as each side captures the me262 (they hang from the hangar ceiling for the other Me262 cap...Mr Kleinluka of Jagd texture-fame did them for me)

Note: The plane blows up after a bunch of hits...it's a random thing and has nothing to do with capping...you cap the plane regardless of it's condition...but when it goes don't be near...it takes out anyone near the plane

06-19-2003, 08:58 AM
The Banners change like a captured flag? So if i capture the plane with axis the flag will change to axis banner?

Did i got it right? :)

Very cool idea!

Ahhhh...i took a page from Jagd...look carefully...the only bombed out parts are like corners of buildings away from the main area and that one passageway (which is really a cool way to make a hallway)...go to the center of the airfield...look around...you see rubble piles but no damage...it's all a trick...MUHahahahaha
