Compile time???

Is it normal for a compile to take 1-2 hours ?
it is a pain - My question is
How can i speed it up and still get the correct lighting and look?

yes, I haven't had it yet, but everyone says that a 2 hour compile time is normal.

Get a faster comp, make everything more simplified so that VIS and stuff doesn't take so long to compute. And dont run programs in the background. That can rreeaallly slow it down.(takes memory away)

I have a 2.4 gHZ p4 512mb ddr geforce 440 128 meg vid that should do it and all i have on comp is dod and hammer?

Oh god, dont tell me your running DoD in the background before you compile? If you are, dont, I'm betting that will take some serious time off your compile (I dont know how much, a complete guess would be anywhere from 30-60 minuets).

A lot depends on your map, the more complicated (in terms of debre and terrain), the longer the compile time. Which is why the compile time gets longer and longer the more you put into map (dduuuurrrr).

Just run everything on the normal setting. Thats the only thing i can think of...

1-2h is the normal time, my first map took 7 h :)

But now it takes 30-50 min, because of better brushwork :D

Compile times is totally depending on the complexity of you map and your computer. Complex map = extreme long compile times.

Its more important to have much memory then it is to have a fast cpu. When I compile on my p2-350 with 256Mb ram it sometimes drops down to 15% cpu usage due to heavy swaping, so the more memory, the faster it goes.

My new map dod_dayofdays have approximately the following compile times:

csg: 1 min
bsp: 1 min
vis: 30 min
rad: 60 min

This is a fairly large map but build very clean build.

My old map wasnt so cleanly build and had alot more complexity and took somewhere around 12 hours to compile...

1. don't skybox around the whole level if you can avoid it, instead use a lid of SKY over each section.

2. func wall small rubble, stairs, furniture, small hills and such on the ground. speeds up VIS.

3. planning low r_speeds often = faster VIS. the more line-of-sight blockage, the less work for VIS.

4. -chop 96 parameter for RAD will make the patches bigger=a few less=less work and faster RAD. usually you don't notice 96 vs 64. you can try 128 - but some sharpeyes may notice weaker light work.

but mostly you grin and bear it if you want a good looking level.
