What did german tankers wear anderneath their uniforms ? Normal T-shirts or (D'uh) tank tops ?

They wore a grey colored blouse underneath their tanker jacket

As a matter of fact I'm working on a set of these guys. Now because the same black uniforms or camo jumpsuits for every class look a bit boring, I decided to have one model wearing just a simple white shirt. I have seen videos of tankers doing just that, but I can't remember anymore what exactly they wore.

I've seen one photo of a German tank driver wearing a sort of leather waist coat with a tank top underneath. I dunno if these were issuse or jus summat he brought himself. I'll try and dig out the photo for you and scan it.

You could do the leather jackets that they wore, and give some of them those beret crash helmets

Those berets are cool looking but they were fazed out early in the war. They were discontinued because it was difficult to use a headset while wearing one. They were replaced in early 1941 by the black overseas cap.

Interestingly enough the black leathers that tankers sometimes wore were originally issued to U-boat crews. They're mentioned here: http://www.eliteforces.freewire.co.uk/Uniweb/waffen_ss/black_pz/black_uni.htm

True, but the berets look cool, and that's the important part. You can find an overseas cap in the bits and pieces thread somewhere on this forum. It isn't textured, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

Well, the overseas cap wasn't that difficult to model.
Correct me if I'm qrong, but weren't those barrets also issued in WW1 ?

The Condor Legion tankers wore berets during the Spanish Civil war (wouldn't that make a cool mod subject?) but I don't think the germans wore berets in WW1. They did wear a funny looking cap called a Feldmütze that was similar to a field cap but without a bill. That may be what you're thinking of. I don't know about the navy but the army and air service wore them. If you ever see any pics of WW1 german aircraft at an airfield the ground crew is often seen wearing them.

Is this what you're thinking of?: http://www.ir459.org/images/equipment/mutze.jpg

Ah, that's what I was talking about. The barret did look familiar though and I just remembered from where: those things where used for some time in the new-founded german army after WW2.
