Can someone give me the run down on how to make a "orange map"?

I'm brand spankin new on making maps... i just thought itd be cool to try to make one.

I downloaded SDK, the thing says im making a map for Half-Life 2: ep. 2
I just figured thats cool since Dod is just a mod of HL2, but im not sure.

I'd just like to make an "orange map" style map.... so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Nate

google hl2 mapping tuts, it's going to take you awhile to learn how to map properly trust me. I've been mapping since 3.1 dod and am still consistently learning new techniques etc.

Also check the tut/help section in the mapping forum ;)

Right click on Source SDK and choose launch options. Add -engine ep1, then restart Source SDK. This'll give you the option to start Hammer for Day of Defeat: Source

Since a recent update, the SDK uses the HL2:E2 engine. In order to map for older games, you need to right click on the SDK in your tools list, click on properties, set launch options, and enter exactly this (without the quotes): "-engine ep1"

When you're ready for it, the textures you'll want are dev/measuregeneric01 and dev/measuregeneric01b

Yea here's what you do,

Learn all you can about Hammer, read all the tutorials you can. Then right before you start to map, take a big mallet and whack yourself on the head. Now you're ready to make an "orange map".

If you're gonna go to all the trouble of making a map add some color to it. Give the buildings a building texture and the ground a dirt, street or grass texture. I myself have taken the time to learn how to use hammer(sort of) and have made a few maps. The maps I've made aren't the most beautiful maps out there but they all have color to them and are fun to play.

Don't sell yourself short. Break out of the "orange" and live a little.

Just my opinion,

JCC

The DoD Federation site also has a search-able database of tutorials.

Enjoy. Good luck!

Despite the fact that there are millions of them, and that they're inherently horrible, Orange maps are a great way to learn how to use Hammer.

the other thing to, don't expect to release your first few maps, they will suck, all the mappers I know have the same thoughts on their first few maps.

They're way too simple to learn anything properly at all.

ORANGE MAP are NOT a good way to learn hammer and mapping technics.

all you do is put block here and there add one or two flags and run the compile... WAAOU BIG DEAL!! what's the point...

I'm still working on my first map (it's been more than a year!) and I don't bother what people may think like: it's been sooo long your working on it... we'll never play it blablabla"....

maybe.... BUT kkep in mind that if you decide to map it must be first of all FOR YOU....

With my first map I've learned lots and lots of technics optimisation... and I've even been able to help others by making a tutorial on this forum even though I've never released any map.

There are loads of tutorials out there just waiting for you to give it a go... so give yourself a bigger chalenge.....
