Smaller? :(

I'll try it out though.

smaller because the spawns are closer to the middle

Feels less like Caen with the new flags layout and number, but it made for a good game with 12 players. Still have to give it a go on a full 32-slot server.

2 remarks:

- there's a problem with smoke grenades. The smoke doesn't develop to its normal volume. Instead, it just fizzles and all you see is a mini-cloud maybe a foot high. It seems to happen only in some areas of the map. The issue was already present in RC1 (I thought I'd let you know about it but can't seem to find the post). It looks like this:

- getting stuck at this spot:

Thanks for a great map! Caen2 is one of my favorites from 1.3, and I was really glad to see your version. It's been a very popular map on our server. Kudos!

The change of spawn placement is ok. It makes the game more active.
The lighting looks more like a 1.3 map. The RC1 version was shiner, wasn't it ?

Anyway it's a wonderful map !

Well, it's not a bad map. Let me say that starting off.

But at this point I would have to stop comparing it to Caen. Right now it shares about as much in common with 3.1 ver of Caen as the Source ver of Jagd does with the 3.1 ver of jagd. If it weren't for the statue in the middle of the map I wouldn't have even recognized it as Caen. The map is much, much different except for the most basic layout. It plays completely different. Also, I found the release statement to be very misleading. I read it as you shrank the actual size of the map to match the original Caen series of maps (right now almost everything is much wider and open). Obviously that was not the case; The spawns were moved closer.

This is neither good nor bad (everyone will have their own opinion); I guess like many people I was just hoping for a more faithful conversion of Caen and I didn't understand what you were shooting for.

I agree. We are running rc1 and rc2 as as two seperate maps on the servers and offer two seperate downloads from our map library

you must understand that dod 1.3 is NOT dod source. the gameplay is completely changing. an i have more caen in my map as the statue. look the bombing house from middle to the axis last flag, look at the 2nd us flag and the axis 2nd flag.

then the axis and allies sniper spots in the middle. there are a lot of the old caen. i think you dont want see it.

in dod 1.3 you dont have this range with grenades as dods, you also dont have british with enfields.

i have released the map for months ago and the version rc2 was playing on many servers, i have see that the players like it. 5% of dod players know about the old dod caen map. BUT most of dods players dont know the old caen.

my understanding of a caen port is that you can play this in dods.

Green, we like both versions and are running both on our servers.
Its just that rc2 plays differently enough to be thought of as 2 different maps and not necessarily a replacement for rc1 :)

What I find interesting, Green, is that when people give their opinion about your maps, you basically tell them they are wrong. You don't physically say it, but you try to debate why you are right and they are wrong.

Take the comments here as constructive criticism, because that's all it ever is. No one here ever says a map is crap and always try to be thoughtful in their crits.

Please understand Green, I am not faulting you at all really. I'm just tired of seeing the name "Caen" associated with this map. It really has departed from the same map that evolved over 4-5 years of DOD development. It's name is "Goodwood", and it should be appreciated for the map that it is (which BTW is not bad at all). But constantly comparing it to Caen just heightens the expectation that it WILL be like Caen, and it's really not. I guess if pressed to describe it myself, I'd say "a map inspired by dod_caen." That may be very well what you have said in the past, However I was reffering not just to your desriptions of the map, but the community also.

As for that tired arguement of "Source plays different" I can only point to dod_strand, a near exact repro of the older dod_charlie; it plays exactly the same on source as it did on older versions of DOD. Ditto for dod_flash.

I applaud you as a mapper for doing and extremely tough job; mapping is far harder than anything I have modded for this game. I 100% encourage you (or any other mapper) to make the best dang map you possibly can. Tweak and refine things as you see fit; it is your work and you should be happy with it! Last thing I want to do is discourage you or any other modder. I just think the map, which is good, would gain even better acceptance if people (not just you) would stop trying to compare it to.... well you get the idea.

the map has elements of caen, and the map is different. so the name also different. "Goodwood is my caen remake"

i do my best to make maps that the players want play.. thats all what i want^^ youre welcome coyote

well i like to play this map whether or not one wants to compare it to caen.

and to answer your question: i prefer the brightness and colour from shot 1 (if you could make the ground a little less look like sand from de_dust) and the light-position from shot 3.
