I was looking through my collection of colorplates the other day, and I came across one of a foriegn volunteer unit serving with the ss, I believe they are Croatian or something, anyway, they have distinctive headgear, namely a fez.

I just couldn't resist putting that in game, so I whipped one up and stuck it on vandories pea-dot axis set.

I also plan on changing some gear around, giving them mountain boots, and giving them goggles. Also some minor texture changes so they better fit that pic.

Yeah, that's exactly what they are, mountain troops, although a more literal translation would be mountain hunters. The ss had several Gerbirgsjager divisions, take a look at this page for a listing of ss units- http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/3125/kgc/waffen-ss/insignia-oob.html

On a side note, can anyone identify the camoflage pattern in that first pic I posted? I'd like to do something like that for this pack.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you on the camouflage, but I really like the camouflage. Would be nice to see those ingame.

The picture is from SS Handschar gebirgjager division, they are Bosnian muslim volunteers, my brother in law who is Bosnian muslim (who's grandfather was a partizan under Tito) knows an old geezer in his town who was in SS Handschar as a volunteer. They where definately NOT Croatian, Croatians had their own SS division, called SS Kama, alot of people think that Handschar is Croatian, that is totally wrong, SS Kama is Croatian and SS Handschar is Bosnian muslim. In SS Handschar there where only muslims. The fez is a typical remain from the days that the Balkans where under Turkish rule till 1912.
Fez is only worn by muslims in that area, a Serb or Croat will never ever wear a fez in his whole life.

But anyways, I like the model with the fez tho, you are gonna release these???

Thanks for the correction Matthijs, I did a little research into the unit's history, but obviously got confused as to the composition.

If anyone would be interested in helping me out with some texturing, I could get this done real quick. I'd like to give them that cammo pullover and a few other things.

Awesome. Really good job. I wondered if anyone would ever do the SS fez.

this link shows the fez in black as well. And a good pic of the collar tab ( I had actually never seen the fez in anything but black until your pic)

Here's a little update, I put the goggles on their helmets from my unreleased Bersagliere v2 set. I'll also put goggles around the neck of the unter and the sniper, I may even see what they look like wearing them.

06-03-2003, 09:49 PM
awsome!

06-04-2003, 09:31 AM
Are you also gonna make a version that all the classmodels wear a fez????
Fez rocks!!

I think I am gonna bother that old geezer my brother in law knows, when I am in Bosnia this summer visiting my sister, maybe he has got some goodies left over from Handschar where he served during WW2, maybe he will sell me something :D

Trigger, I really appriciate your attempts on recreating rare uniforms and units. I´m reallly waiting for these, espicially because I´ve never seen this kind of camouflaged uniform before. The fez caps also rock!

great job trigger. these look very class, cant wait to use them :)

offtopic: have you modelled anything else for the community to use? like remember those boots, and helmets you made, that you allowed everyone to use? it would be great if you could make more, those were awesome. mabey make some od those german short boots, with the small leggings aorund them. (<-- forgot what thier called)

I'm still working on getting their gear right. I was looking at Devins SS gasmask guys and they have some great gear, so I might use some of that for these models.

Russ, tell me what you want and I'll see about making it. As for making some ankle high boots with gaiters, I was planning on doing that for this set, so you can cannabalize them and use what you'd like.

As for a set with all fez's, I could do that, I'll even give them two different colored fez's. I'll do red or black for the unter and sniper, and green for the rest. I'll include all three colored textures so people can choose between them what they like.

Trigger

I still have all those hats and the boots that I made back then, maybe I'll re-release them on the new forums. I also made this smart little gasmask with semi opaque eyepieces. Engineer requested it and I threw it together last nite, the texture is a rush job but I'm sure someone can do something better if they wanted to.

I don't plan on putting this on any of my mountian hunters, but I may sling it on their belts.

I'm done with everything now except to put some more gear on them, and make a fez-only version. Expect a release tomorrow if I get real lazy today.
