new to Source - old to dod 1.3

Hi guys..

I am going to have a crack at source mapping and I have 2 questions..

1. I have been messing around with the flash map -it has been a great help to understand the principal of things..However, I see it has a prop_static or two. The telegraph pole is from props_urban which I thought was from HL2 ? - My question being is if I use a model from any of the folders it shows me - like props_pipe - do these automatically get inserted into the map ? When I built 1.3 maps you made a folder and put things in there then when you uploaded it, you zipped them all up..I cannot find the path to this pipe it is hidden ? Is there a legal issue if we use them ? I know flash uses the phonepole - and I see they are all visible - so is this ok..

2. A similar thing with textures. If I use some of the lovely ones hammer presents me with will I be in trouble ?

I just want to make sure Im on the level before I spend countless nights getting things right - only to be told "Oi !! No...."

Many many thanks for any pointers.

Happy New Year.

Ken

On source if it is not a shared file you will have to use a program like pakrat to add the custom files to the bsp when your done compiling the map before you release it .

No big deal at all it takes a few minutes to include all custom files and mini map , credits with Pakrat

hmmmm..

This is the thing that I have a problem with..You cannot see the mdl files that show under staic props..Unless I am doing something wrong.

When you look at the path, for example the phonepole used in flash, it doesnt show..it is in the EP1/HL2 folder - which isnt there even when you show hidden folders.

So how would you go about putting that mdl into your map (as in flash)..

Regards and many thanks for your reply.

I never thought about it that much...

Just make sure all content is coming up for you in hammer. Then use them. It isn't till you release it that you need to use a program to compile the files into the bsp... I used mapanalyst and it figured it all out by itself.

Since a recent Steam update, you need to declare that your map is being used for episode 1. To do this, you need to add -engine ep1 to the Source SDK launch options.

Once you do this, any model or texture that appears in your browser will be useable. You only need to worry about Pakrating content if you have added any custom textures that are not part of the default set that everyone has.

Thanks guys for all your help..I will now spend loads of time making a map...Yup I will post here it is have a laugh images here when I have something for you to look at...

I take it the mdl restrictions are similar to the 1.3 - like you cannot use loads in the same area if detailed (like in 1.3 you would not put 6 detailed tiger tanks in the same area for fear of lag).

Hi LQ, longtime !! you still playing Dod/Dod:S ?? Since BB went down ? If so where, I'll come and give you a game or two !!

Many many thanks

If you map the same way on Source than you did on 1.3, you'll be totally fine. The only thing I have to tell you (being a previous non-source mapper myself) is that you'll be excessively shy on detail, which Source can actually handle pretty well in forms of models. So don't be afraid to play around and put a bit more than you'd usually put.

For the most part, models are better to use than brushes. As long as you don't go overboard, you'll be fine.

Hi Ken

Good to hear from you and see that you are getting back into mapping. I don't play old DoD any longer, but you can find me on the bagpuss Playground Source servers playing under the name Dai Of Defeat.

We have a standard map (81.19.219.206:27025) and custom map (81.19.219.206:27015) server, both of which are pretty much full all of the time.

Look forward to seeing you there.
