after 2 years or however long it's been, i've finally got a public release of this map ready. there's not really any reason it's taken this long, i just never got round to recompiling after a couple of problems i fixed months ago.

it's set on dog sector of omaha beach, with 4 capture points - 150mm tbsk gun, 2 flak88 canons and a mortar position, although due to entity limits and bugs, they're flag caps instead of detonation objectives. the barbed wire on the beach needs to be destroyed with det packs, which all allies spawn with, at which point the axis spawns move back from the clifftops. there are a couple of fixes from b5, one problem i'm still aware of is that some areas seem a bit too dark. i don't know why since i never changed the light settings, but that'll be fixed for b7/rc1, and hopefully valve will release the sdk update in time for that.

I just gave it a quick run through to check it out, gotta admit, it looks like you worked very hard and it looks very nice. I was impressed to see a map so large and open that has pretty good FPS, I was getting around 70 FPS average which was nice.

There is one problem though, your objective hud icon textures are missing! They just appear as the default purple/black checkerboard texture. Also, a personal criticism I have is that the soundscape is just too excessive in the beach area that it ruins the immersion factor. My theory with soundscapes is that they should be used to simulate sounds from a vague, indeterminate distance. Let the soundscape simulate the sound of battles going on nearby, but let the actual players create the immediate sounds. One of the sound files in the beach soundscape sounds like it's coming from right next to you, and it happens far too frequently at that. It reminds me of a funny memory of mine: a friend and I were watching Saving Private Ryan with his grandfather, a WWII vet, and he says to us "bah, I was there, the war was never that loud!"

Anyway, aside from those criticisms, it's a pretty solid piece of work, great job. :)

Need to play with a full server to really test your fps.

Overall map looks great. Love the fact the nazi gunners spawn right next to murder holes to unleash hot lead on the yanks! :D

I renamed all my materials, models etc folders to test and didn't notice the icons were missing, but incase they are, I've uploaded them separately on their own:

I was missing the icons as well. d/l your file and it had a lot of empty folders. I think you meant just this one

My general impression is pretty much the same as others' already posted; the ambient sound it just too much. It really, really needs to be toned down, not just on the beach but the bunker as well. other than that, I love it!

Nice to see you release this map. It is certainly ambitious.
The incessant shelling, shaking and "stun" is a little much imo. Maybe tone it down on the beach and remove it form the escarpment and village ?

Map is perfect except for the soundscape, as noted by a few. Ok comp said it well:
the soundscape is just too excessive in the beach area that it ruins the immersion factor. My theory with soundscapes is that they should be used to simulate sounds from a vague, indeterminate distance. Let the soundscape simulate the sound of battles going on nearby, but let the actual players create the immediate sounds.
Surgeon, this is awesome. This and plateau are two wonderful, ginormous maps - will have to schedule an FNF Ginormous Map Night sometime. :)

Haven't had a chance to run around in it, but I loved the previous versions.

Are the envmaps fixed in this one? That's one of the things that made it a little weird, seeing my .30 cal all shined up like it was just doused in oil.

A few problems with this map...

1: The packed cfg, this is a big no-no, because a server can't override anything packed in a BSP, if you want a recommended cfg keep it outside the BSP so servers can still change it. We have stopped playing this map because it disables the bonus round.

2: You got some invalid spawn points, probably too low...
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (-91.6,-723.6,-723.6)
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (-117.0,-723.6,-723.6)
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (1295.7,-719.0,-719.0)
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (1322.8,-719.0,-719.0)
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (-855.0,-772.0,-772.0)
Invalid allies spawnpoint at (409.7,-784.0,-784.0)

3: The ambient sounds, already been said though.

Holy Crap! This is beautiful, can't wait to try it on a server. Except for the problems already mentioned (sound and hud pics) I only found a couple of tiny problems that could easily be fixed to perfect this map.

http://img32.picoodle.com/img/img32/5/11/11/t_doddogsectom_70ca6b0.jpg (http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?img=/5/11/11/f_doddogsectom_70ca6b0.jpg&srv=img32)http://img28.picoodle.com/img/img28/5/11/11/t_doddogsectom_0db581e.jpg (http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?img=/5/11/11/f_doddogsectom_0db581e.jpg&srv=img28)

Pic 1: Shadow looks a bit weird.
Pic 2: This area looks reachable, but isn't. I always get annoyed by clips that make no sence.

Good job, glad you've finally released it! :D

OK feedback from a player of DOD for only the last 3 years

This is absolutly a great example of what can be done with the game - its such a shame that the game developers dont take on maps like this and make them a core part of the system. If they found a way of using the talent out there in map development this game would grow rather than stagnate.

I still think if they just took the lead on this it still has the ability to knock spots off many WW2 games out there - the close hand capability of this game is untapped

Sorry ranting away - but I have had more monies worth from this game than the bucket of games I have bought that I thought were good but dont get passed the 6 months playability window

Well done

bloody fantastic

Can someone put the package together so flags works with an in-game download?

No one is going to download and install 2 zip files, and it's going to keep this map of many public servers, due to this minor issue.

I'd do it if I knew how.

the soundscape file is zipped into the bsp (which overrides anything found in the local folders) so there's nothing i can do about those until _b7 or _rc1, whichever i decide to release the next version as.

We call up the map when there's lots of players, because it's a beauty.
But have left it off rotation (soundscape and bonusround issues)

Update soon Surgeon?

We ran thismap last night for a few rounds.

In one word: Awesome.

Though the usual complaints were the sound being too loud, and bonus round being disabled.

I agree with one of the posters above. If you want to change the server cfg variables for the map, do notpack it in the BSP file. Have a seprate CFG file.

We will keep the map running on our server, and its available by mapvote.

Great work but as everyone else already said several times the sounds are tooo loud and the weapon restrictions suck a big one !
and its a pain in the ass unless you provide all the files icons and a .res to download right .

but other than that its a great map we are looking foward to a updated version from you .

I don't know if it's just me, but the TNT plant spots on the beach are white instead of yellow.

Also, when you pick up TNT, it doesn't show up on your HUD.

TheSurgeon
12-19-2007, 01:07 PM
You start off with TNT. It never showed up on the HUD, I think you probably need the map to be detonation, otherwise the icon wont appear. I had the TNT in crates before, but because people didn't have the icons it was too confusing, so I gave it them from the start. I assume the colour thing is for the same reason - no detonation targets or not team set.
