Have you set up Hammer correctly so that it knows to put the BSP file in the right directory?

The Hammer compile process basically produces a .bsp file quickly, which it places in your day of defeat source/dod/maps folder. It then overwrites this .bsp file adding vvis data and then vrad information.

I would check that you have set up Hammer correctly first.

Gimpy what did you name your map? I had this happen to me before as well as one of my members. You have to make sure that when you save your map that there are no commas, apostrophes, etc when you compile the map or the BSP will not be read right and it wont store the map correctly.

BAD MAP NAME EXAMPLE: dod_mymap's_v1

RIGHT WAY: dod_mymaps_v1

Just a thought in case that is what you may have done?
Just open hammer or go to your:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\YOUR EMAIL\sourcesdk_content\dod\mapsrc folder and see what name you have for the map. If you did add other characters just rename the BSP file correctly and then recompile your map with the correct name.
Also make sure that you have no spaces in your map name either.

and here's what it says:

You're not even running vbsp, that's why :P

and how do i do it

in the first place it's not even making a bsp.file

LionelQueripel

You need to go back to your Hammer setup and make sure you configure the bsp part by entering the location of the vbsp.exe...

i think it's looking for a bsp file to copy and it cant find one... how can i make one??

i think it's hammer thinking that there's already a bsp file and trying to find and then copy over it... i don't know how to fix it... god...wheres valve when you need them!!

In hammer, load up your mao, type F9 to access the compile options, and make sure the bsp part is set to "normal" and not to "no" or "entities only"

gimpy117
09-26-2007, 09:05 PM
well, i'm pretty darn sure that i have it set to normal

but the first time i saved the map i never ran a bsp.

is it possible that it thinks theres a bsp to over right when there is??

Hammer should overwrite any map file that exists with the same name automatically. If not, it should just save it normally.

have you saved your map to your desktop????

don't do that.... I got problem when I saved my map to the desktop: always save it within source sdk.

I ran in the same problem once: I had to go back to a previous saved version of my map.... I hope you have one.....

nope... i don't

so i guess i can look at it, but not play in it....

talk about a let down...how come the darn hammer can't just make a new ,bsp....???

I would check that you have set up Hammer correctly first.

If you are saving a bsp to the desktop during your compile process then you will not be able to play your map. Go back into Hammer and change your bsp path so that it saves it in your dod/maps folder.

You should have Hammer set up so that it places a bsp in your sdk folder AND your dod/maps folder. It is the latter file that you will play. If you are saving it to the desktop as it appears, then you will have to move this manually each time.

because it's not being told to. at least not according to the log that you posted.

You know what's funny, your log says that you DID save it to your desktop, and that you did NOT run vbsp, yet you're telling us that you did and that you're "darn sure" that vbsp is running. How about you check these things because you're obviously not doing your part of the work?!

then i don't know why it's decided to be off, because i ran another test map with the SAME settings and it worked...

This is an old post, but whatever...

I ran into the same problem. The map has no errors, but Hammer fails to find the BSP... Because it's not there, and it won't make a new one.

It seems like somewhere along the line, an error occurred, and the VMF would save fine, but the BSP was never created... So, Hammer just assumes it should be there, and stalls.

Here's what I did- Copied a BSP (any) and pasted it into the mapsrc folder, renaming it to the name of the project I'm having a problem with... Then, when you compile the map, it finds the BSP and changes it accordingly. No problems at all!

So, If your project named "map" doesn't work, grab a BSP and rename it "map" and Hammer will do the rest. As long as it finds a BSP with the right name, it will change it, and run fine.

I reinstalled SDK 3 times before trying this. If you have compiled and run maps before, you have no configuration errors. All you need to do is slap a BSP in there!

Ok man there are a few things it could be if you haven't gotten it fixed yet...

1) You need to specify what engine you are using put "-engine ep1" into your Source SDK launch options.

2) Refresh your game content and restore settings to make sure your vbsp isn't somewhere else.

3) Sometimes vbsp wont run because of complex world geometry (but it should have notified you of this when running vbsp).

4) Check for map errors press Alt+P or got to the map roll out and click on Check for Problems.

5) If none of the above doesn't work try to configure hammer manually try it on another computer you may have defective hardware (long shot but it can happen). Also try to go to the containing folder of the map and delete everything but the .vmf. Look and make sure your settings for your compile isn't Fed up. You could also use 3rd party compiler tools.

Guy above it should have created the .bsp file no mater what happens what your doing above it wont have the same map settings but it would work to an extent.

It sounds like to me that you have a error in the initial BSP build and the BSP file is yet to be created. Set the run map options to Run BSP - Normal and both Run VIs and Run Rad to No and see what errors you get. The BSP run should only take 1 to 2 minutes.

Cheers.
